And I would have no issue signing Fayne at around 3 mill or so per over Stralman at over 4 mill + per (that extra 1 mill + we can save is big for us right now). Fayne is bigger, and we can certainly use his size on the back end.

The Devils Ryan Carter could be on the Rangers radar.

The Rangers are believed to be interested in the Devils Ryan Carter who may be able to fill the spot that Brian Boyle is likely to vacate. (NY Post)

Carter, 30, has played in 360 games in his career and 43 playoff games.

With the Devils last year, Carter played 62 games, had 72 hits, 7 goals, 3 assists and averaged 11:19 per game.

Over the last two seasons, when Carter is on the ice the Devils controlled 55.2% (2013) and 51.3% (2014) of the shot attempts.

Carer had a cap hit of $775,000 the past two years for the Devils. (Cap Geek)

Two of Carter’s seven goals last season came against the Rangers. He had three goals in six games against the Rangers during the 2012 playoffs.

We should just bring over all the Devs rejects...:).

This scary that this is where we are at. The big news is we may be interested in Fayne and Carter to replace Stralman and Boyle. And we may lose Moore and Pouliot as well (and Richards and his 20 goals are already gone).

    Sweet...

I agree Al. We'll see where we sit in 10 days or so. The current news/trends don't look good, but we'll see what actually happens. Hopefully all the stuff we are hearing and reading is just the Rangers postioning themselves with the FA's.

Looks like Ehrhoff is being bought out by the Sabres, might be worth a look. Possibly sign him and deal Klein for a right handed Dman.

I agree with you Prod, Klein costs far too much and is easily replaced by Allen or McIlrath for a third of the price. Klein can't pass, can't shoot, and is too small to bring the physical play the Rangers are so sorely lacking on defense. Allen or McIlrath are an upgrade over the equally inept and Stralman as well. They were hardly the reason the Rangers went to the Cup.

They need a dman with more offensive ability than Fayne, someone like Gilbert who can play on the pp. Fayne isn't worth 3m.

I actually like the idea of getting Erhoff at a buyout discount. If they can get him for $3m a year I think he would be a good pickup....Rather have him than Fayne for sure

If all things were equal, cap hit around 3 mill, I rather have Ehrhoff also, but I do like Fayne as well. He is a right shot while Ehrhoff is a left shot. Ehrhoff is 32 while Fayne is 27. And Fayne is bigger and more physical, which is something we need.

I think Fayne's best days may be ahead of him. Not sure I can say the same about Ehrhoff, but his time with awful Buffalo might be a total toss away.

Clearly Ehrhoff is more offensive, but I happen to think we need a big physical guy more than an offensive guy as McDonagh and maybe even Moore grow offensively. Plus I bet Ehrhoff goes for more money than Fayne as well.

I will say this, I would take either of those guys at 3 mill or so over Stralman at 4 mill or so, and I bet Stralman gets more years as well.

Id be for signing both Fayne and Ehrhoff not signing Strahlman and trading Klein for a forward or a pick/prospect.

I went to capgeek and did the armchair GM.....Not sure how realistic this stuff is but when you actually look at the team and contracts thru the site you can see the challenge Sather has with $69m limit

Here are the players I signed:

    RFA's:
    Kreider $2.2.m cap hit
    Brassard $4m cap hit
    Zuc $3.1m cap hit
    Moore $1.2m cap hit

    UFA's:
    Paul Statsny $7.5m cap hit
    Mason Raymond $2m cap hit
    Ryan Carter $1.1m cap hit
    Christian Ehrhoff: $3m cap hit

Promoted JT Miller $850k cap hit
Promoted Dylan McIlrath $700k cap hit

    Traded Klein for picks

Still need to get a 4th line RW - Have about $1.3m left in cap space

    Nash-Statnsy-Kreider
    Hagelin-Stepan-St Louis
    Zuc-Brassard-Raymond
    Carter-Miller-TBD

    McDonough-Girardi
    Staal-Erhoff
    Moore-McIlrath

    Lundqvist/Talbot

Very tight. That is a good team, but who knows if those numbers will work. Ehrhoff for 3. Kreider for 2.2. MZA for 3.1. Brass for 4. Raymond for 2. Plus we'd have to flip Klein as well. All of that and we still have very little room to complete the team, and have any extra skaters at all.

It is tight. Even 1 mill more would have been a huge help.

Now I do think some of this is posturing by Sather and we will add a C for sure after we mix and match with some of the UFA's/RFA's, but who knows what will really happen in 2 days.

I will be very surprised if we signed Stastny though. We are not even mentioned with him right now. If he leaves the Avs it will be for a big money LONG term deal. He already said he'd give the Avs the chance to match any deal. And I am not sure Sather really thinks he is worth that money, I know I don't.

Yeah. I think some of those numbers are realistic. Some are not.

Statsny at 7.5m is about right. Brass at 4m is right. Moore 1.2m is right. Carter at 1.1 is right.

Zuc might get more than 3.1. Erhoff likely will get more then 3m. Kreider might get closer to 3m. Raymond was a bargain at 1m last year he might get 2.5-3m

This exercise definitely shows that 71m ceiling would be way better.

BTW I agree with you on Statsny. But his cap hit will be 7.0-7.5m regardless of where he signs I think.

No doubt. Between 70 and 71 mill, which is where I thought the cap would be set, would be a huge help to us.

On the flip side, the Pens and Flyers are also up against it, so they have to deal with the same issues we do, albeit with less FA's.

Agreed, the number is right there.

It does show that if we get creative we can add a C. Maybe not one at 7, but someone in the 6's is possible and we can finish the team off. That is why I do think we add another C. Doubt we go with Step/Brass/Miller as our 1-3. That should be 2-4 next year.

Yeah if we get a real #1 and bring back Brass suddenly we have a great 1-4 mix at C

Guys how does kreids and zucc possibly being arbitration eligible change things for them salary wise for us?
