One backup PG thread to rule them all

When have you seen Blake run an offense? He never ran the offense when he was here or with the Lakers. The guy can't even run a fast break, much less an offense.

I'd be quite happy with Blake. He'd be a very poor starter, but he makes a nice reserve because he can hit three-pointers to maintain spacing and has generally had a very solid Assist Rate (the number of possessions he uses that result in assists). He's a useful cog off the bench. The one thing he can't do which prevents him from being the perfect acquisition is play defense. That is a significant flaw, but you're not going to get an unflawed point guard for the BAE or the MLE (even if the Blazers hadn't signed Kaman). Livingston signed a deal for the full MLE and he can defend and pass but can't shoot. Blake for the BAE would shore up the position.

stretch 4/5 in sullinger and Rubio is the 3rd guard for Portland. Rubio provides d and can run and run and run an offense.

 

He was inconsistent for the Lakers but he played well for them when they had a full team.

How do you get 14 assists in one quarter (An NBA record) and not run an offense?

 

I'm a big fan of CJ and I think he'll be best as a backup PG instead of playing so much of the time at the 2. Defensively he is too short for a SG and he is most effective with the ball in his hands. When Mo was away from the team for family reasons CJ had a couple great games as the primary bench scoring guard. So I want a backup PG on this team that won't bitch or complain if CJ beats him out of the rotation. But we definitely need a veteran PG in case Damian misses a game with injuries, CJ struggles, or opponents are applying full court pressure. We need a reliable veteran option with little risk of poor play, no upside potential is needed.

Blake would be solid. He wouldn't try to do too much, he doesn't gamble on defense. He can really shoot and knows how to setup a half court offense. He'd just be a one year stopgap.

Ridnour or Udrih would be fine as well.

I think Mo Williams is more talented than those players but Mo would not be a happy camper if someone is taking his shots or minutes. Mo is terrible defensively especially when paired with Lillard. I want to see the bench take a step forward as a group and Mo makes so many bonehead rookie mistakes on both sides of the ball its just surprising for a veteran. He needs to cut down on stupid fouls and careless passes. At this point in his career it's unrealistic to expect him to change though. The biggest worry I have about Mo leaving is losing his off the court locker room presence which so many member of the team talk about.

Lin would be an interesting option but I think we need to make a choice with him or CJ next year, both won't be happy together. If Houston trades Lin to a team with cap room it'll probably be a lottery team such as Orlando or Philly. They would be happy to take Meyers and Wright which would also save them $10 million of cash due to Lin's unique contract.

Hinrich would probably be my first choice but I doubt he will accept the BAE. Kirk probably wants a team where he is at least a lock for the backup PG and he may want a chance of playing more minutes with the starters.

Deron Williams is still owed $60 million I don't know who suggested him. Devin Harris is not a good enough 3 point shooter to have any interest for a Stotts offense. Same with Rodrigue Beaubois, no 3 point shot. I would consider Billups if he was interested but I suspect he'd rather retire. Mario Chalmers would be awesome but he'll get more than the BAE.

 

That one stupid game against the clippers (and an extremely green Deandre Jordan). He is NOT good at running an offense, unless that offense consists of isolation control (blazers) or high post passing and domination from the other guard (lakers). We don't run anything like that.

If we don't run a system anything like what you have watched him play in, who is to say he isn't better suited for it? I would think Stotts' offense, when run correctly, would suit him better than the other ones you mentioned.

 

I think the evidence would be his time playing (not much) under Terry Stotts in Milwaukee or with the Warriors at the end of this last season.

Did Stotts run this offense in Milwaukee or did he adapt this philosophy after his time in Dallas. But to answer your question, this offense is better suited IMO for PG's "w/limited handles and average (at best) vision". Lillard is not exactly John Stockton or Steve Nash. What Blake has always done well is setting up the offense and then moving without the ball. This offense has a lot of ball movement, not a PG who dominates the ball. Which I believe Mo did a little too much.

 

Agreed that this offense is better suited for PG's w/limited vision than Stockton's Utah teams or D'antoni ball. As for handles, debatable considering how much Lillard breaks his man down on the ball.

I disagree. Blake never moved at all when here (Nate didn't have anyone move) or in LA where he hung out in on the corners or baseline opposite the ball waiting for a swing pass. He didn't set anything up either place, he handed off to Roy or Kobe, or made a pass to Pau/whatever big at the top of the key and ran to his corner and hid.

This offense requires much more vision/handles than where Blake found his success (portland next to Roy, LA next to Kobe) b/c there everything ran through other players. We don't have that type of offense, or players like Roy or Kobe here. Before you invoke Lillard please consider a defensive backcourt of Lillard and Blake rather than Blake and Kobe or Roy. Neither Dame or Blake is guarding SG's w/o looking foolish.

He'd probably fit best in Houston when Harden is on the floor. Half-court isolation based offenses with a scoring threat @2.
