He could admit to the killings now and nothing would happen. He was found guilty in a wrongfull death court decision though. He's just trying to sell a book.
They could maybe try him on something else if they found the evidence. Part of the hook seems to be that it's how he would have done things, y'know. He's not saying he did things. It's just like how Snoop won't say he smokes weed, even though he obviously does.

It's not like people want to hear about OJ anymore. But when a guy who was acquitted for a murder and 12 years later feels the need to bring it back up in how he would do it. That does send out feelers how about his mental state.
