...I'm quite aware of the numbers, for both players. Yogi greatly benefitted from a stacked line up his whole career and also batted RHed in a RHed hitter's park...Munson played on some horrible teams with no protection and he batted RHed in YS. And his early numbers were skewed just as DiMaggio's were because of "Death Valley". ...Munson was great. Steinbrenner agreed, so did his team mates, so does monument park, and so do the over whelming majority of Yanx fans.
You obviously missed the part where I said, 'If you fielded 8 Thurmon Munsons you couldn't go wrong" Or that he played with more heart then many players I've seen. That's high praise & well earned.
regardless of anything, Thurman Munson was one great Catcher, in every aspect, I'd not blink to have Thurman on any great Yankee Team, any era..... Our Yogi Berra, for our Generation.....! End of Story, regardless of stats....the man was a brick wall backstop, and leader. Had his Pitcher's finely tuned, part their job, part his....! Hail and Remember-Munson......
You don't realize had important his leadership was until you no longer have it. Which BTW: the Yankees haven't had in 35 years now.
wow!!!!! munson was tough as nails! he was the best teammate anyone could have, it was all about the team & family! munson would have been the best yankee catcher in any era... WTF?
munson would put 1 in your ear if u dug in too deep... munson was a clutch hitter imo, catcher who could not run but was smart on base path, hit for avg loved the left field line..... munson could throw any runner out, 1 of the best defensive tools of ignorance in game i have ever seen, not better then 59 tho
Okay so MAYBE over-rated was the wrong term. I just wouldn't put him as high up on a pedestal as many have. And Again, JMO. Like I said there's nothing specific about his career that jumps out at me. Nothing memorable. Something like, Remember when Munson hit those 3 HRs to beat the Tigers? or remember when he won the batting title? Or remember when he hit for the cycle against the Indians. Remember when he had that 30 game hitting streak etc etc etc. there's just nothing special about his accomplishments that stand out. I mean outside from his guts, toughness & heart. which yes is very important. And again as a player I loved the guy. I just didn't think he was that special. Okay, rather then beat this death & since points have been made, time to move on.
