I was just a kid back then. We had this elderly lady in the neighborhood who was a trip. Really cool lady. Anyway, she had this police scanner and would listen to it at night. As soon as the plane crashed she came over to a few of the neighborhood houses to tell everyone what was happening. We all went over to her house. Half the neighborhood is there listening to her police scanner. She had this bar in her house, she's mixing up drinks for all the adults. The kids are next to the TV and the police scanner. The TV stations couldn't get near the accident and they didn't really know what was going on but the cops were telling each other everything over the radios. They were pretty tripped out and there was no such thing as political correctness with the cops back then. The things they were saying on the police radios was hilarious. There was also some pretty sad and gross things but you don't pay much attention to that as a kid. Since the plane ran out of fuel there was no explosion. People were walking around dazed after the crash. I think the Captains name was McBroom. For some dumb reason that always stuck with me, lol.
My dad told me he was working at liquor store when it happened and as soon as he got off work he drove out that way to see it. Not every day does a plane crash in city limits. The fact that there was no fuel and it landed in trees helped it from being a lot worse. That's the heart of Rockwood. Pretty ghetto area. Its all apartments now.
I was in NJ for Christmas. I took a United flight changing planes in Denver a week and a half later, which was the same route that plane took.
