    Fisher: One suspension is enough

Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher prefers to keep players' punishments out of the public domain. In the case of Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Jameis Winston's supermarket citation in April, however, Fisher said there weren't any consequences to speak of.

When Winston was caught shoplifting seafood at a store in Tallahassee, Florida, he was ordered to reimburse the store and perform community service. He also was suspended from the baseball team, and at the time, Fisher said he stood by baseball coach Mike Martin's decision. Speaking to reporters Monday at the annual ACC Kickoff, Fisher explained why he declined to pile on the punishment.

"Not after we found out the story and what had happened and [what Winston did] was not a malicious thing," he said. "It was not done with intent."

At the time of the incident, the Leon County Sheriff's Office said it would not speculate on whether Winston took the items -- $32 worth of crab legs and crawfish -- intentionally.

"People need to realize, when you suspend him in baseball, you understand how important baseball is to him? That cut his heart out," Fisher said Monday. "If it was done maliciously, we may have done other things. It was a silly mistake and not done with any malicious doing, and you don't punish a guy twice for the same crime."

Former Florida State and NFL linebacker Deon Humphrey has been arrested

Former Florida State and NFL linebacker Deon Humphrey has been arrested in an assault on his girlfriend.

The 38-year-old was taken into custody early Thursday and charged with domestic battery by strangulation. The Palm Beach Sheriff's Office says deputies who arrived at the linebacker's Wellington home found redness on his girlfriend's neck and bleeding from her ear consistent with being grabbed by the neck.

    Deondre Francois opts for FSU

While Florida State has Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston for at least one more season, the future of the quarterback position is up for grabs.

The Seminoles added another player to the race with the commitment of ESPN 300 No. 55 Deondre Francois, who announced his decision Thursday at his high school.

The 6-foot-2, 188-pound Elite 11 participant and No. 4 dual-threat prospect in the 2015 class selected the defending national champions over Auburn.

The Seminoles were considered the favorite for the majority of the recruitment, but Oregon, Ohio State, Notre Dame and Tennessee all made runs at the Under Armour All-America selection at various times since the end of the 2013 season.

    'Bobo' Wilson pleads no contest

Florida State receiver Jesus "Bobo" Wilson has pleaded no contest to two misdemeanors for his role in a scooter theft on campus, his attorney confirmed Thursday.

Tim Jansen said Wilson had the initial felony charge reduced to misdemeanor petty theft and misdemeanor criminal mischief. Wilson already has paid $1,074 in restitution to the scooter owner, and was sentenced to spend 30 days on a jail work camp and two years' probation. The probation can be reduced to one year if he completes the work camp.

    Kevin Olsen suspended for opener

Miami quarterback Kevin Olsen has reportedly been suspended for the season opener against Louisville, casting even more uncertainty on the position with the Hurricanes set to begin practice Tuesday.

The Miami Herald and WQAM Radio in Miami both report that Olsen has been suspended for a failed drug test. Miami coach Al Golden refused to comment on Olsen's status during a news conference previewing practice Monday, but said Olsen would "absolutely" be at practice when it begins.

If Olsen is indeed out for the opener, the Hurricanes would be down to their third option at quarterback. Ryan Williams, the projected starter, is rehabbing a torn ACL.

    RB Shadrach Thornton reinstated

North Carolina State coach Dave Doeren has reinstated junior running back Shadrach Thornton following an indefinite suspension.

The suspension came in December after authorities cited Thornton for misdemeanor simple possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Police had visited an apartment he shared with teammates in a sexual battery investigation, with a probable cause affidavit for a search warrant listing Thornton as the suspect.

    Kelby Brown suffers torn ACL

Duke linebacker Kelby Brown is out for the season with a torn ACL, dealing a huge blow to the Blue Devils' defense.

Brown, an All-ACC selection last season and again this preseason, injured his left knee during the team's scrimmage Monday night. An MRI confirmed the tear, the school announced Tuesday.

John Wolford to start for Wake

Wake Forest true freshman John Wolford was named starting quarterback Monday, taking the job after just two months on campus.

Wolford beat out Tyler Cameron and Kevin Sousa, who failed to impress new coach Dave Clawson during the spring and at the start of fall practice. When Wolford takes the field against Louisiana-Monroe on Aug. 28, he will become the first true freshman to start his first game on campus at Wake Forest since Mike McGlamry against NC State on Sept. 7, 1974.

    Pitt CB Trenton Coles transferring

Pittsburgh's thin group of cornerbacks has taken another hit, as Trenton Coles has left the program and will seek a transfer, coach Paul Chryst said Wednesday.

The move further decimates what was an already depleted group of corners, as the Panthers are now down to one returning player with any experience at the position: redshirt junior Lafayette Pitts, who has played in all 26 games over the last two seasons, starting in 25.

Michael Brewer to start at QB for VT

Texas Tech transfer Michael Brewer has won the starting quarterback job for Virginia Tech.

Hokies coach Frank Beamer made the announcement Saturday, choosing Brewer over senior Mark Leal.

"Both of the guys gave great effort and played very well in preseason, making it a very difficult choice," Beamer said. "It was a very close race."

UNC still deciding on starting QB

North Carolina coach Larry Fedora isn't ready to name a starting quarterback for the No. 23 Tar Heels.

Fedora said Monday the coaches haven't decided whether junior Marquise Williams or redshirt freshman Mitch Trubisky will start against Liberty in Saturday night's opener. Fedora says both have taken first-team reps during preseason camp, and he hasn't publicly committed to a deadline for naming a starter.

    Frank Beamer gets 2-year extension

Virginia Tech has extended head coach Frank Beamer's contract two years, through Jan. 1, 2019, the school announced Wednesday.

"I believe in him, I see where we're headed so a show of support for a Hall of Famer, the winningest [active] coach in college football, it will help us recruiting wise and then hopefully it eliminates some of the distractions during the year," Virginia Tech athletic director Whit Babcock told ESPN.com's Andrea Adelson.

Jameis Winston, Seminoles hold off upstart Oklahoma State in opener

Jameis Winston and No. 1 Florida State might have to play better for a return trip to the stadium where the next national title will be decided.

At least the reigning champion Seminoles didn't leave the $1.2 billion home of the Dallas Cowboys with a season-opening loss.

Winston threw for 370 yards and scored on a sparkling 28-yard run to smooth over some rough spots, and Florida State tied a school record with its 17th straight victory by holding off Oklahoma State 37-31 on Saturday night.
