Well, I sure am glad to read Papa G and Mediocre Man's insights into the real thoughts and motivations of a man they do not know. I'm quite sure they have absolute expertise on the matter. The simple fact is, if Michael Sam never plays a down in the NFL he is a winner. Look it up. His parents are drug abusers, his father in and out of his life, rejected him for being gay. Three of his siblings are dead, two in prison. Many of the people with whom he grew up are dead, on drugs, in jail. None of his family were at his draft party. He is the only one in his family to go to college. And he set an example of honesty and courage by being an openly gay, not simply athlete (as in swimmer or skier or skater) but football player. The epitome of machismo. I mean, if this dude were a 100% hetero coming from that background I'd root for him and so would all of you detractors.
Of course he is a winner, and as a capitalist, I'm proud of him for trying to make as much money as possible. The guy was a great college player who likely has no shot of being a great NFL player. He may as well cash in and sell his brand. That's what America is all about! You can come from nothing, be both a racial and sexual preference minority, and make a lot of money as early as age 23, in Mike Sam's case. Bravo, I say!
If his goal is to fit in to a locker room and make an NFL roster, having a reality show probably isn't the best idea......not to mention he nor his agent bothering to tell the team he was before they drafted him. What is wrong with that commentary? I'm certainly not rooting against him, but 'm also not rooting for him simply because he is gay
Apparently The OWN network has postponed the Michael Sam reality show. Best news for Michael Sam. IMO
Good news for Michael Sam. He made the decision after discussion with the team to postpone so he can concentrate on football. Also, he probably realized, wisely, that too much attention focused on him could be off-putting to his potential teammates. Glad someone advised him well. Some years ago I applied for a job and was told they'd hired a woman who did not work out. No doubt they'd hired a lot of men who did not work out, but they were seen as individuals who did not work out while the one woman became a template for all women. Fair or not, and it's not, how Sam behaves will be a template for gay men. You know, we drafted a gay guy and he was more about his own fame than team, so we don't want to draft another - although plenty of straight men are the same way.
Yep. I wonder if the poster who singled us out for being critical of the show will now single us out for being the voices of reason. It was obvious to anyone who has tried to make a team at any level that excess attention and distractions are never a good idea. I also wonder if part of it is due to the reports that Sam didn't look like an NFL player at the Rams rookie camp.
The show was a really really really bad idea. Why would he want to turn it into a spectacle? His goal should have been to blend in. To be just like any other football player. Why the hell would he want to draw attention to the fact that he's different? I think the team sat him down and told him they would cut him if he didn't cancel the show.
As my brother-in-law reminds all the time . . . nerds rule the world these days (and he is right) He is an asian male He co-founded tripwire, worked his nerd ass to build it up, sold it, and now travels the world while getting paid a nice fee to be a speaker around the US Although what I hear is kids from India are the new Asians . . . overachieving kids in school with little social skills.
They want to bring him back on the practice squad if nobody picks him up, but from what I've heard, he could very possibly get picked up by another team.
Sam had a strong preseason. I think he has a pretty solid chance of hooking on with some team or else ending up on a practice squad.
It was a long shot for him to make the rams, the Rams also cut their sixth round pick and their other 3 seventh rounders. He will make a practice squad somewhere and will be an injury away from making a team. He will never shine in the NFL, he is can really only rush the QB but I think he will float around the league for 4-5 years
What do michael Sam and Jason Collins have in common? They are both pretty bad at their sport, comparatively...
Sam is a brave young man.. Not brave because he came out, brave because he tried to make an NFL roster with one move as a DE Hopefully he makes the practice squad, however, there are about 30-40 players with equal or better skill sets at the DE position that were also cut....so who knows. Either way, I'll pray for him
Rams are pretty deep at DE. He would have had a better chance at making a team if he was drafted elsewhere.
He'll make a roster. The guy is a merchandise gold mine. He has the sixth most popular jersey on NFL.com. That's higher than Brady, Aaron Rodgers, or Adrian Peterson. Why wouldn't a team want to keep him on their roster? They've got people like Kingspeed, who never watch football, going out and buying his jersey. Someone will pick him up, and someone will keep him on their roster. He generates too much revenue.
