Anu Solomon to start for Arizona

Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez announced Monday that redshirt freshman Anu Solomon has won a four-way quarterback battle to start Friday night against UNLV.

Solomon beat out USC transfer Jesse Scroggins, LSU transfer Jerrard Randall and Texas transfer Connor Brewer. Rodriguez said he told the four of his decision Sunday night.

Rodriguez also said he might play more than one quarterback against the Rebels.

USC's Josh Shaw admits to lying

USC senior cornerback Josh Shaw has admitted to lying about how he suffered his ankle injuries last weekend and has been suspended indefinitely, the school said in a statement Wednesday.

Shaw said he suffered a pair of high ankle sprains Saturday night after jumping from the second story of an apartment complex to save his 7-year-old nephew, who was struggling in the pool. Shaw said his nephew did not know how to swim.

Shaw said he suffered a pair of high ankle sprains Saturday night after jumping from the second story of an apartment complex to save his 7-year-old nephew, who was struggling in the pool. Shaw said his nephew did not know how to swim.

Head coach Steve Sarkisian said Tuesday the school received several calls questioning the authenticity of Shaw's story and had been investigating the matter.

"We are extremely disappointed in Josh," Sarkisian said in the statement. "He let us all down. As I have said, nothing in his background led us to doubt him when he told us of his injuries, nor did anything after our initial vetting of his story.

    Josh Shaw 'potentially' can return

USC senior cornerback Josh Shaw, who admitted Wednesday to lying about how he suffered his ankle injuries last weekend, could potentially return to the team this season, coach Steve Sarkisian said Thursday.

Shaw has been suspended indefinitely and was already expected to miss at least the first month of the season with a pair of high ankle sprains.

"Potentially," Sarkisian said when asked if Shaw could return to the team. "Sure."

No. 19 Arizona State erupts in opening rout of Weber State

D.J. Foster slid into the featured back role with ease. Taylor Kelly and Jaelen Strong picked up where they left off last season. The young defense held its ground.

There were some sloppy moments, but as opening tests go, No. 19 Arizona State can't complain too much.

Foster ran for 147 yards and three touchdowns, Strong had 10 catches for 146 yards, and Arizona State opened its season with a 45-14 rout of Weber State on Thursday night.

Brett Hundley was all smiles, mostly because of his defense.

Playmaker Ty Montgomery returns punt as No. 11 Stanford rolls, 45-0

Ty Montgomery answered any questions about his health on his first touch, and Stanford's reconstructed defense looked just as rejuvenated in the season opener.

Next week will really give a glimpse of how far the Cardinal can go this year.

Montgomery returned his first career punt for a touchdown and caught five passes for 77 yards and another score, and No. 11 Stanford tuned up for a date with No. 15 Southern California by routing UC Davis 45-0 on Saturday.

Steven Manfro out with torn ACL

UCLA running back Steven Manfro will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL, a school spokesman said Wednesday.

Manfro was taken off the practice field on a cart after injuring his knee Tuesday. The junior was part of the No. 11 Bruins' three-man rotation at the position with Paul Perkins and Jordon James, and he often was featured as a receiver out of the backfield. UCLA spokesman Steve Rourke confirmed Manfro's injury Wednesday.

Marcus Mariota-led Ducks score final 28 points to down Spartans

Trailing Michigan State 27-18 in the third quarter and facing a third-and-10, Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota found himself confronting a decision while on the run: Either pitch the ball to freshman Royce Freeman, or try a keeper.

Mariota, who is as adept with his feet as he is with his arm, decided on the flip to Freeman for the first down, and the No. 3 Ducks would go on to score the first of four unanswered touchdowns for a 46-27 victory Saturday night over the No. 7 Spartans.

Brett Hundley passes for 396 yards as No. 11 UCLA escapes Memphis

When Memphis safety Fritz Etienne returned an interception for a tying touchdown with 13:44 to play, No. 11 UCLA appeared to be in a world of trouble in its home opener.

Not to the confident quarterback who threw the pick, however. Brett Hundley calmly kept the Bruins on course for another win at the Rose Bowl.

Hundley passed for 396 yards and three touchdowns, Paul Perkins rushed for two scores and UCLA survived a fourth-quarter scare for a 42-35 victory over Memphis on Saturday night.

Andre Heidari's 53-yard field goal helps No. 14 USC by No. 13 Stanford

New Southern California coach Steve Sarkisian smiled, pumped his fist and threw his arms in the air as his players jumped around the sideline at Stanford Stadium.

All of the emotions that had been lacking for USC the past few years finally came pouring out on the road, against a rival and in front of a national television audience -- sometimes even a bit too much. Few things looked pretty for the Trojans on Saturday except for the final score:

    USC 13, Stanford 10.

D.J. Foster and Taylor Kelly left New Mexico behind -- in a hurry.

USC AD Pat Haden fined $25,000

USC athletic director Pat Haden has been fined $25,000 and reprimanded by the Pac-12 for his actions in the third quarter of the Trojans' 13-10 win against Stanford on Saturday.

Haden left the press box after getting a text message from someone on the USC staff -- at the request of coach Steve Sarkisian, who also was reprimanded -- and went to the sideline, where he got into a lively discussion with the officiating crew.

Marcus Mariota powers No. 2 Oregon past Wyoming

One week after a season-defining win over then-No. 7 Michigan State, No. 2 Oregon spent the first quarter Saturday trying regain its footing against upset-minded Wyoming.

Quarterback Marcus Mariota didn't let that happen, leading the Ducks on six consecutive scoring drives to lift Oregon to a 48-14 win over the Cowboys.

Backup QB Jerry Neuheisel steps in, leads No. 12 UCLA over Texas

UCLA never panicked when Jerry Neuheisel had to go into the game, even though the backup quarterback later told his coach he was nervous.

When it was over, and Neuheisel had thrown two touchdowns for the 12th-ranked Bruins in a 20-17 victory over Texas on Saturday night, the third-year sophomore and son of the former UCLA coach was lifted onto the shoulders of his teammates and thrust his arm in the air.
