OU's Blake Bell wins tight end job

Blake Bell, Oklahoma's former starting quarterback, is now its starting tight end.

The depth chart, which was released Monday, revealed the 6-foot-6, 260-pound Bell beat out Taylor McNamara at tight end. Bell, who started eight games under center last season, switched positions before the spring with the emergence of Trevor Knight.

"Blake, he's been really solid," Sooners coach Bob Stoops said Monday. "He loves doing it. He's really a big a target, a comfortable target for Trevor or any quarterback when in the middle of the field. He's got great hands.

    TCU 'playing two quarterbacks'

Trevone Boykin is in the same position he was last year with TCU, again part of the unanswered question of who will be the starting quarterback only days before the season opener.

Texas A&M graduate Matt Joeckel, who spent the last four years with the Aggies behind NFL draft picks Ryan Tannehill and Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel, will use his final season of eligibility at TCU. He joined the Horned Frogs with some familiarity of their new up-tempo offense.

Even before a question was asked Tuesday, coach Gary Patterson addressed the quarterback situation to start his first weekly news conference.

J.W. Walsh will start at quarterback for Oklahoma State when the Cowboys open the season against No. 1 Florida State on Saturday, coach Mike Gundy told ESPN Radio.

"J.W. has taken the majority of the [first-team] reps and will be the guy that goes out there and starts for us," Gundy told "SVP & Russillo" on Wednesday.

Oklahoma State takes on the No. 1 Seminoles on Saturday in the Cowboys Classic at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

    No. 20 K-State rolls past Stephen F. Austin, 55-16

Kansas State coach Bill Snyder gripped the podium, stared into a row of television cameras and offered a sobering assessment of his team's performance.

The offense played well when it wasn't going three-and-out to start the second half. The defense was stingy, except for the huge chunks of yards it allowed on broken plays. Special teams were generally solid, other than Jack Cantele's missed field goal.

The No. 20 Wildcats may have whipped Stephen F. Austin 55-16 in their season opener Saturday night, but Snyder made it clear that there was plenty of room for improvement.

David Ash won't play vs. BYU

Longhorns QB David Ash will not play against BYU this weekend after experiencing more concussion-related symptoms, and coach Charlie Strong said he is worried about the quarterback's future.

Ash told Strong and team doctors that he believes the first hit he took against North Texas triggered a recurrence of symptoms after the game. He missed 10 games and received a medical redshirt after suffering a concussion at BYU last season.

Levi Norwood out after wrist surgery

Baylor's high-powered offense keeps taking hits.

Starting receiver Levi Norwood has become the team's latest player to get injured. Norwood will miss at least the next three weeks after undergoing wrist surgery for an injury he suffered in the opener against SMU, Baylor coach Art Briles told the Waco (Texas) Tribune-Herald on Thursday.

Norwood, who had four receptions last week against SMU, caught 47 passes for 733 yards and eight touchdowns last season.

    Texas' O-line takes another hit

Texas' offensive line has taken another significant hit after losing its most experienced starter.

Offensive tackles Desmond Harrison and Kennedy Estelle have been suspended for the Longhorns' game against BYU on Saturday due to a violation of team rules, the school announced Wednesday.

Without Harrison, Estelle and senior center Dominic Espinosa, Texas now has the youngest starting offensive line in the nation with a combined five career starts. Espinosa suffered a broken ankle against North Texas and could miss the season.

Tulsa brings out the best in Sterling Shepard.

The Oklahoma receiver set career highs in receptions and yards last year against the Golden Hurricane. Seth Russell tosses 5 first-half TDs as Baylor throttles FCS team

Baylor backup quarterback Seth Russell had a simple plan when throwing toward speedy freshman standout KD Cannon.

"He just knows how to get open," Russell said. "I just threw it up and he went and got it."

Russell threw for 438 yards and five touchdowns while playing only the first half, three of those scores to Cannon in the first quarter, as the 10th-ranked Bears overwhelmed FCS team Northwestern State 70-6 on Saturday night.

Jake Waters, No. 20 Kansas State rally past Iowa State

For about a quarter, it looked as if Kansas State was going to get run out of Ames.

The Wildcats survived a furious upset bid from Iowa State by leaning heavily on quarterback Jake Waters and a defense that shined in the second half.

Waters had an 8-yard touchdown run with 1:30 left to push 20th-ranked Kansas State past host Iowa State 32-28 on Saturday.

David Ash out indefinitely, Texas says

Texas coach Charlie Strong said Monday quarterback David Ash is out indefinitely and that the Longhorns will push ahead with Tyrone Swoopes as the starting quarterback.

Ash missed Texas' 41-7 loss to BYU on Saturday because of concussion symptoms. Swoopes was 20 of 31 passing for 176 yards with one touchdown and one interception in his first career start.

Ash has only appeared in four games since the start of the 2013 season. He was cleared to return this season and played most of Texas' season-opening win over North Texas. Ash later reported headaches and dizziness after the game and hasn't returned. He was on the sideline for the BYU game last week.

Bryce Petty leads No. 8 Baylor to blowout of Buffalo

Bryce Petty's back feels fine, and the Baylor Bears can breathe easy.

The senior quarterback showed no signs of being affected by two cracked bones in his back by leading No. 8 Baylor to a 63-21 win over Buffalo on Friday night. Petty showed he was capable of carrying the Bears' explosive offense by completing 23 of 34 attempts for 416 yards and four touchdowns through three quarters.

Sooners' Keith Ford out 2-3 weeks

Fourth-ranked Oklahoma will be without its leading rusher when it travels to West Virginia this weekend.

Sooners coach Bob Stoops said Monday that sophomore Keith Ford will be sidelined for at least two to three weeks after suffering a slight fracture in a non-weight-bearing bone in his ankle late in Oklahoma's 34-10 win over Tennessee.

    Longhorns' David Ash won't return

Texas Longhorns quarterback David Ash has elected to end his football career after struggling with concussion-related symptoms for the past year.

Coach Charlie Strong announced the junior quarterback's decision after practice Wednesday. Ash had started 22 games in his career with the Longhorns but was shut down on Sept. 1 after experiencing more symptoms.

"We just decided, because of his health -- that's the No. 1 concern for all of us -- that he's no longer going to play football," Strong said. "But he is going to be part of the team, because I told him I wanted him around the team, and that's what he deserves."
