I found a number of sites with similar articles. When an email program receives email and parses it, any vulnerabilities in the email program can be exploited. By parse it, I mean to be able to show the subject and from, among other things.
Which is why one should use gmail, leaving any executeables on the Google servers, unless you specifically download them, rather than a POP/IMAP client.
I actually like Apple products. I just think using gmail is a sensible approach to not falling victim to e-mail viruses and malware and such. You still have to sweep your system more, though, with a Windows machine than an OS X machine.
Do you have evidence that Google is reading the mail, or are you referring to programmatic ad targeting based off keywords in your e-mails?
