About 5,000 shells, bombs, and warheads filled with chemical agents. Found by US troops and Iraqi police.

I don't know why it was kept quiet, but I never understood how people could think Saddam didn't have them.

Media probably wanted to put a hush-hush on it. Bashing Bush was way too fun and easy.

He used them, so we know he had them. Hell, we probably gave them to him.

They had a pretty legit chemical manufacturing capability in the 80's. After that, no idea...it's classified. ;)

I liked the original title better, to be honest. After listening to people go on about how there were no WMD's for a decade, I like the title that points out that they were, indeed, found.

The NYTimes released this story a few days ago. Apparently, Iraq was able to rapidly build the weapons without any sort of WMD program. So if left on his own, Saddam would have trivially been able to create new ones in short order.

Weren't these from the Iraq/Iran war, and not actually related to the "WMD's" that the war was justified on?

    http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/...casualties-of-iraq-chemical-weapons.html?_r=0

War provided urgency; Mr. Hussein added the cash. Western nations, some eager to contain Iran’s Islamic revolutionary state after the American hostage crisis from 1979 to 1981, lent Iraq support.

With remarkable speed, Iraq built a program with equipment and precursor purchases from companies in an extraordinary array of countries, eventually including the United States, according to its confidential declarations.

German construction firms helped create a sprawling manufacturing complex in the desert south of Samarra and three plants in Falluja that made precursor ingredients for chemical weapons. The complex near Samarra, later renamed Al Muthanna State Establishment, included research labs, production lines, testing areas and storage bunkers.

Iraq produced 10 metric tons of mustard blister agent in 1981; by 1987 its production had grown 90-fold, with late-war output aided by two American companies that provided hundreds of tons of thiodiglycol, a mustard agent precursor. Production of nerve agents also took off.

Which doesn't mean that the weapons found were made after 1991...you know, the ones that the war was justified over and would've proven justification.

If these were legit weapons, why didn't the administration (who needed ANY good news about the war) brag about it?

It just means he had the know-how to build a program in a hurry ("with remarkable speed"). If left to his own devices, he would have.

What we did find were massive pesticide plants that were trivially able to make more poisonous gases (than pesticides). In fact, ISIS took over one of the largest of those recently, thanks Obama.

That's my recollection. We were only looking for new WMD's. 5000 WMD weapons of war didn't matter. He couldn't have done any damage with those.

Any 3rd grader can make WMD's.

Thanks to Monsanto, any world leader can simply buy them.

Reagan illegally sold a massive amount of WMD's to Iran in exchange for NOT releasing the hostages until after he got elected. Had this deal never taken place, Reagan would never have been President, and Real Americans would still have a pot to piss in.
