Moviegoers sought pre-Halloween scares at theaters this weekend, propelling the spirit-summoning Ouija to the top of the box office with $20 million. The horror film based on the Hasbro board game meant to communicate with the spirit world beat out Keanu Reeves' return to the big screen in the noir thriller John Wick, which made $14.2 million, according to studio estimates compiled by box office tracking service Rentrak. Ouija succeeded where other movies based on board games — such as 1985's Clue and 2012's bomb Battleship — have failed in the past. The Universal release also performed the task with a cast of relative unknowns and was produced for less than $5 million by Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes and micro-budget horror king Jason Blum in conjunction with Hasbro.
