Any time I hear about Toronto doing anything, regardless of how good a move it might seem, I can't help but think of Monty Burns chuckling over a Ziggy cartoon. "Oh Ziggy, will you ever win."

...Martin has been in decline for a few years now...but he has a good 2014 and he gets this kind of money?

...he also has not been the picture of health over the last few years...but maybe he can DH some too...I dunno.

Some dumb bitch former Cubs now transplanted Rays Fan told me she could not afford to go to ball games because of the Yankees driving up prices. I begged to differ with her, always plenty of cheap seats at Tropicana.

Martin signs 5yrs for 16 mil per with Toronto - he's a Canadian- you would think the Jays could've had some kind of "home team" discount or he would've gladly signed for 15 mil per over 5 years. lol.

Anyway- can't help but think about the comparison between McCann and his contract with Martin and his contract- especially going forward from here on.

Martin- will be 32 in Feb, 2015
McCann - will be 31 in Feb, 2015

Yanks signed McCann for 17 mil per over 5 yrs based on his overall career numbers while still being under 30 yrs old.

Toronto signed Martin for 16 mil over 5 yrs based on him coming off one of his best seasons ever and still being reasonably young at 31 yrs old.

McCann has just completed his first Yankee season finishing with his lowest OPS of his career and not reaching his previous seasonal expectations.
Martin has just completed possibly his best season ever.

This will be interesting to see how it plays out for the rest of these contracts.

So basically what you're saying here is that last season Martin had an UP year & McCann had a DOWN year. And since one can't assume that both will have similar years going forward lets just look at there careers prior to 2014 to see if they're both worth similar monies. Just to be fair................................

    McCann 1,105 games, 176 HRs, 640 RBI, 276 BA, .348 OBP, .468 SLG% & 816 OPS
    Martin - 1,052 games, 108 HRs, 473 RBI, 253 BA, .346 OBP, .393 SLG% & 740 OPS

Now you tell me, based on these careers (not one season) do you think they're worth the same?

If stats are the only factor regarding a contract, then no they aren't the same. But as we all know, stats are but one factor, especially in terms of a critical position like catcher. Or say hitting coach? Lmao!

Well, all things being equal--> both catchers, similar ages, both players not having a recent history of serious injury, both players being "good" guys in clubhouse and work ethic never in question..
..I guess the only other significant factor is defense, and which side of the plate they bat from.
After that, it is what I said: going forward from here on

That is, which player produces better over the length of their contracts.

Jays were looking for veteran leadership. They have been rotating catchers for a few years and were always in the market for a more complete defensive player (framer) at the position. The fifth year was supposedly the deciding factor with other teams willing to offer him similar money over the first four. I do think it is an over-payment but I understand AA's desire to add a team captain type guy. Compared to an older option like Victor Martinez I think the signing makes sense, especially if the Jays are committed to raising their salary to the $150-million range. Dunno what this means for Cabrera--especially with the Jays chasing John Lester at the moment.

I hear what you're saying but based on what they've done over there careers I think its ridiculous that Martin should get the same money that McCann is getting. JMO.
