No, not usually. You keep bringing up this PER stat like it's the end all end all of who is the MVP of the league. Bottom line is MVP comes from a team that led their respective team to an amazing record in wins/losses. NO is 7-5. 4-1 at home and 3-4 on the road. Not amazing 12 games in. If they season ended today they'd miss the playoffs. = he wouldn't get the MVP. Stats don't mean everything. Not a video game.
People used to vote using the Larry Bird Formula, also known as EFF. It's points, steals, rebounds, blocks, assists, minus missed shots and turnovers. I can't find that ranked anymore on the net though. It's all PER nowadays. I would guess AD leads the league in the Larry Bird formula right now.
My answer is no, he's not winning MVP..not sure if he'll win DPY but he'll be an allstar and all nba. What keeps him from winning these awards is the failure of his team to get far in the playoffs or even make them.
It won't drop that low. He shoots a high FG% and rebounds well. That alone is enough to keep his PER in the mid-20s. Throw in the blocked shots and steals and he'll be high 20s, possibly even low 30s at season's end. That's great, but it won't win him MVP if his team has a loosing record and misses the playoffs. Answering my own question: You have to go all the way back to the first year the MVP was awarded to find a MVP winner that played on a team with a losing record. Bob Petit was MVP while playing for the 33-39 St. Louis Hawks, but the Hawks did make the playoffs and even advanced to the second round. So, if Davis wins the MVP and his team misses the playoffs, it will be unprecedented. Winning matters when it comes to MVP voting - it always has (well, almost always). BNM
