Jahlil Okafor scores 16 points as No. 4 Duke beats Temple

Four games into his college career, Duke super freshman Jahlil Okafor got a lesson in the tough, physical, inside game of basketball, and learned a little.

Okafor had 16 points and eight rebounds in his introduction to the rough-and-tumble world of New York City basketball, and No. 4 Duke overcame an off night from the field in coasting to a 74-54 victory over Temple in the semifinals of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic on Friday night.

Jones, Rozier led No. 7 Louisville past Marshall

The conditions were in place for Louisville to struggle.

The No. 7 Cardinals missed their first 13 3-pointers and All-America forward Montrezl Harrell was in foul trouble.

Instead, the defense sparked a comfortable 85-67 win against Marshall on Friday night as Louisville forced 21 turnovers, including 13 steals, in overcoming a poor shooting night.

No. 9 Virginia halts George Washington 59-42

Virginia may have a little bit too hyped up for its first real test of the season against George Washington on Friday night.

Once the No. 9 Cavaliers did what coach Tony Bennett told them to do, they dispatched the Colonials with ease.

Justin Anderson scored 18 points, Malcolm Brogdon had 15, and the Cavaliers put the defensive clamps on George Washington in the second half on the way to a 59-42 victory, the fourth in eight days for Anderson and his teammates.

No. 23 Syracuse holds off Iowa in 2K Classic consolation game

The big lead was gone. Chris McCullough wouldn't let the game get away, too.

McCullough had 20 points, nine rebounds and a key steal with 8.4 seconds left, and No. 23 Syracuse held off Iowa 66-63 on Friday night in the 2K Classic consolation game.

Jahlil Okafor's double-double lifts Duke to Coaches vs. Cancer win

Johnny Dawkins walked over to Mike Krzyzewski and gave his former coach and mentor a hug after No. 4 Duke beat his Stanford team in the title game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic.

One thing was clear: Dawkins knows Coach K's young team is a powerhouse.

Freshman center Jahlil Okafor had 10 points and 12 rebounds and dominated the closing minutes as No. 4 Duke took the title with a 70-59 victory Saturday night.

Louisville smothers Savannah State for 61-point victory

Savannah State missed so many shots and committed so many turnovers against sixth-ranked Louisville that the question was if it would score against the Cardinals rather than when.

The Tigers eventually did, though not very often.

Montrezl Harrell had 15 points and nine rebounds, and the Cardinals jumped to a 29-0 lead over the first 15:58 against Savannah State en route to an 87-26 blowout Monday night.

Maryland spreads scoring load, knocks off No. 13 Iowa State in final

Mark Turgeon gathered his Maryland coaching staff in his hotel room the night before facing Iowa State, and the scouting report he got was so sobering that he offered a solution.

"I said, 'Should we just forfeit?' " Turgeon recalled.

Good thing nobody took him up on that idea.

Jared Nickens and Jake Layman scored 15 points apiece to lead a balanced offense, and Maryland shut down the No. 13 Cyclones for a 72-63 victory Tuesday night in the CBE Classic title game.

McClellan leads No. 17 Miami over Charlotte 77-74

When Sheldon McClellan arrived at Miami last year after transferring from Texas, he told Hurricanes coach Jim Larranaga he lacked confidence in his game.

McClellan said he needed a lot of work.

A short while later, Larranaga met with his staff and told them, "this is one of our goals -- to get him to understand just how good he can be."

The coaching seems to be working.

McClellan scored a career-high 31 points and had 11 rebounds as No. 17 Miami defeated Charlotte for the second time in three days, 77-74 on Tuesday night.

Re: McClellan leads No. 17 Miami over Charlotte 77-74

Louisville coach Rick Pitino's latest milestone victory featured more drama than he would have liked.

What's important is that his Cardinals won with the trademark tough defense that helped make Pitino a Hall of Famer.

Montrezl Harrell had 15 points and 13 rebounds, and No. 6 Louisville beat Cleveland State 45-33 on Wednesday night for Pitino's 700th college victory.

Jahlil Okafor's 24 points key No. 4 Duke's rout of Furman

It takes a certain level of humility to play with Duke freshman Jahlil Okafor.

Amile Jefferson is figuring that out -- and that led to a big game for both of them.

Okafor had a season-high 24 points and Jefferson added 16 with 12 rebounds in No. 4 Duke's 93-54 rout of Furman on Wednesday night.

Tar Heels roll past Bruins in Battle 4 Atlantis consolation game

North Carolina coach Roy Williams walked into the postgame interview room and immediately rearranged the place cards that signified where Marcus Paige and Justin Jackson would sit.

Even after an easy win he was still tinkering.

Paige scored 21 points and had five assists, Jackson scored 12 points and after shaking up its starting lineup No. 5 North Carolina rode the strength of two big runs on the way to beating No. 22 UCLA 78-56 on Thursday night in the consolation round of the Battle 4 Atlantis.

No. 5 UNC hangs on after jumping out to big lead vs. No. 18 Florida

The score was 12-0 and North Carolina coach Roy Williams was furious, scowling from his spot on the sideline.

And he didn't deny it afterward.

"I was so mad," Williams said. "I was over there ready to pull my gray hair out. I didn't think we were doing a blessed thing right on the defensive end of the floor."

    The scoreboard said otherwise.

Even while Williams fumed, it was his Tar Heels running out to leads of 12-0 and 20-4, and that was more than enough to fuel their 75-64 win over No. 18 Florida on Friday night in the fifth-place game at the Battle 4 Atlantis. Kennedy Meeks scored 18 points and tied a career high with 13 rebounds, while Marcus Paige added 16 points for the Tar Heels (5-1).

No. 8 Virginia holds Rutgers to 26 points to win Barclays Center Classic

The Virginia Cavaliers fit right in a city that loves hard-nosed, defensive basketball.

Even if, as head coach Tony Bennett said, his team's offensive effort "wasn't pretty."

Justin Anderson and Anthony Gill each had 13 points to lead No. 8 Virginia to a 45-26 victory over Rutgers on Saturday night in the Barclays Center Classic championship game.

Terry Rozier plays through dislocated pinkie as Louisville thwarts OSU

The throbbing pain of a dislocated left pinkie wasn't going to keep Louisville sophomore guard Terry Rozier from shooting.

Judging from the multiple ways he helped the No. 5 Cardinals escape No. 14 Ohio State, it didn't seem to affect him that much.

Rozier made three clutch jumpers down the stretch, including a big 3-pointer with 46 seconds remaining, helping the Cardinals survive the Buckeyes 64-55 on Tuesday night in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

Miami gives Illinois its 1st loss, 70-61

Manu Lecomte caught a pass on the perimeter with no defender nearby, so he took his time sinking a 3-pointer, and then raised a fist toward the roar coming from Miami's student section.

Balanced offense and stout defense gave the fans plenty to cheer about Tuesday night, when the 15th-ranked Hurricanes won a matchup of unbeaten teams, beating Illinois 70-61 in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.

No. 4 Duke shoots 65 percent, knocks off No. 2 Wisconsin

Tyus Jones darted through the lane for easy baskets and hit two key 3-pointers. Any time he made a big play, his family followed with raucous applause.

It was quite a Midwest homecoming Wednesday night for Duke's freshman point guard.

Jones scored 22 points, junior Rasheed Sulaimon added 14 and the fourth-ranked Blue Devils shot 65 percent to beat No. 2 Wisconsin 80-70 in a highly anticipated matchup of college basketball heavyweights.
