Re: My "Al Capone" Assignment

My AP Language & Composition teacher gave an assignment over the Thanksgiving break where we had to write about a famous person from the 1920's. We're currently reading a novel, titled The Great Gatsby, which is based around the 1920's and involves the Prohibition law, which prohibited alcoholic beverages from being sold. Seeing how Al "Scarface" Capone was notorious during the 1920's, I decided to do my free write about him. Here it is:
Scarface

Alphonse Gabrielle Capone, better known as the infamous Italian gangster Al"Scarface" Capone, has become a notorious violator of the Prohibition act. Capone hasbeen selling alcoholic beverages illegally in Chicago, Illinois. He was recently placed onthe Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI's) "most wanted" list. Not only has Scarfacebeen selling alcohol illegally, he has also made great amounts of money throughprostitution. Obviously, Capone owns the prostitutes! According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Capone, Capone and his ganghave been grossing in approximately $100 million a year since 1925. Capone hasbeen reeling in nearly $50,000 per month through brothels that Capone began in 1920with his partner in crime, "Big Jim" Colosimo along with his wife, Victoria Moresco. Many Chicago citizens have reported that Al Capone has been bribing Chicago'smayor, William "Big Bill" Hale Thompson, with money so that city officials would allowCapone's prostitutes to sell themselves. Other Chicago residents have confirmed thatCapone has been making threats toward witnesses, claiming he would kill them if theyreported his "business" to authorities. Since early in 1920, Capone has been a target of many assassination attempts.
According to www.crimelibrary.com, in the 1924 Cicero, Illinois, elections,Capone and his gang backed candidates and secured votes by violently forcingvoters to vote for the candidates. The Chicago chief of police received news of theviolence and sent seventy-nine police officers with shot guns to several differentvoting booths. Several cops, who were dressed in plain clothes, went to a certainvoting booth in Cicero, where they spotted Frank Capone, Al Capone's youngerbrother. Claiming that Frank pulled out a revolver, the police officers stated theywere justified in shooting and killing the notorious gangster's brother out of self-defense. An enraged Al Capone stole ballot boxes and kidnapped many officials.By the end of the day, one official was murdered. Capone won the Cicero elections. As for the funeral for his brother, Al Capone spent several thousand dollars, including $20,000 on the flowers alone. Al "Scarface" Capone cried openly at thefuneral and even ordered the closing of several speakeasies, which are places wherealcohol is sold illegally. The Chicago Police Department sent several police officersto the funeral to assure that Al Capone and his gang did not harm anyone during theburial. Currently, we are living in Al Capone's time. He basically owns Cicero,Illinois, and though he is reportedly avoiding paying his taxes, he has been livingquite comfortably without much opposition from government officials. The wealthyCapone recently escaped the death sentence after murdering Jack Guzik, a small-timethug in Chicago, due to the only witness not wanting to testify against the notoriousgangster. Keep your eyes open, folks.
My point for posting is this to provide something to discuss. What do you guys think about Al Capone? Other then the Scarface movie, has anyone here ever took interest in reading about Capone's life? Also, in case any of you are wondering why I made it seem as though I wrote that in the 1920's, my teacher wanted us to write as though the events were occurring currently...

I watched some things on the History channel. To add to the discussion:Al got his scar after... Well what happend was he said something to a girl at a bar and either her or her boyfriend cut him with a knife and that is how he got the scar, the details are a little rusty.I find the guy to be interesting, but I am not a 20s gangster buff or anything, I have never seen the movie either.

The female's male escort was her brother, who fought with Al and sliced him three times with a knife.

Yeah, I was close enough.I read the "Great Gatsby" this year, I won't tell you how it ends (because I am nice like that) but I wasn't the biggest fan of the book. It is better than some crap we have to read in schools, but I still didn't like it. We are doing this whole big 1920s thing, we are now reading about the White Sox and the World Series fix.

Jay Gatsby gets killed by George B. Wilson. Pretty lame ending...Also, I had to write about the World Series fix. It was so boring... I hardly know anything about baseball.
