The Mikan drill is a timed drill that last 30 seconds. This is a good big man drill, though everyone can benefit from it.For 30 seconds you will be under the basket doing layups, while not letting the ball touch the floor and without drilling. You just make a lay up and quickly and under control take a layup from the other side. Make sure your doing a lay up on the right with your right hand then the left side is with your left hand. The object is to make as many layups that you can within 30 seconds. It really does work, I used it a few times. A lot of NBA players have had success with it, the most recognized are George Mikan and Lamar Odom.
I'll definitely try it this Thursday 'cause I don't have school and a lot of my friends are going to bball court to play. It sounds exhausting, and I know I'll have problems with the left hand part.
I have had to do this endless times for basketball practice. It makes me dizzy after awhile, and I hate beennig dizzy. So it sucks. We aren't always timed, sometimes he just has us do a certain amount. Another thing I think you forgot to mention is you are not alowed to bring the ball down after you catch it, you have to keep it up and keep going.
Oh yeah, this is a great drill. I used to do it a lot, especially with my AAU coach when I was about 13-14. We actually had a Mikan Drill competition in practice a few times and everyone had to run a certain amount except for the winner. It was fun, it's a great drill. Big guys, it looks like it won't help, but it really does.
I remember doing this drill. We did this in Middle school for Co Ed Basketball. It does help, but I'm not a big man....
Yeah, this drill helps. A lot of people do it for a lot more than 30 seconds though. I know my coach made us do it for 10 minutes straight...
I always do this drill, but I thought it was called the 1 minute drill and it went for 1 minute, not 30 seconds..well that is how our team used to do them... Either way it is still a pretty effective routine that can definetly help any player out.
I really dont like this drill to be honest. For a guard like myself, how often am I honestly going to be under the basket putting up lay ups with out driving to the basket first? I think it is useful for big man, but I have never been fond of it.
Well George Mikan was a big man loland I like this drill..it gives you that touch for when you're on a fastbreak..so it doenst go off the backboard way too hard and go over the hoop..it gives you that touch..if you aren't a big man
