We must be reading different scouting reports. The guy is sub-30 years old! Hasn't had enough time in the bigs but is said to draw walks, low strike out rate, lefty bat with potential pop (6HRS in 229 plate appearances last year). They only had to give up Greene, leaving the wallet untouched. I hope there's a big arm not far behind.
Hey Bern, don't get me wrong I hope Didi brings a lot to the table, I just don't see it so far. But hell in this case I wouldn't mind being wrong. And like Ron said, at least he'll be a lot cheaper then our other alternatives.
___________________________________ Yeah but isn't this to be expected from a rookie making his first 14 starts? He was pounded in his last start of the season by Baltimore, 3.2 IP , 6 ER, I know all of the games count, but if you take away his last start of the season, his 2014 ERA was 3.24 He has also beaten: Cleve, 6 IP, 2 ER, Balt 7.1 IP, 0 ER Det 8 IP, 0 ER @TB 6 IP, 2 ER @ Det 7 IP, 2 ER Balt 5.1 IP, 2 ER Tor 6.2 IP, 0 ER I'm just hoping Didi blossoms into a pleasant surprise. And I have to expect, by giving up Greene, Cashman must have other plans for the pitching staff.
I also liked what I saw from the kid. If he really blossoms in Detroit & Didi is hitting in the 230s or 240s, I'm gonna be one really pissed off Yankee fan.
______________________________________________ Yep, and someone must also have problems with simple math. Didi's career AB/K ratio - SO FAR - translates into approx 100 Ks over a full season, And his numbers vs LHP are feeble - .184 / .257 /.233 As for Greene - 26 yrs old - 14 starts as a rookie: 3.78 ERA, 9 K per 9 IP ...his last start of the season inflated his ERA (3.2 IP 6 ER) Otherwise it was 3.24 He has also beaten: Cleve, 6 IP, 2 ER, Balt 7.1 IP, 0 ER Det 8 IP, 0 ER @TB 6 IP, 2 ER @ Det 7 IP, 2 ER Balt 5.1 IP, 2 ER Tor 6.2 IP, 0 ER I'm not so sure we should say... "they only had to give up Greene" .. - after just 14 starts and looking at the above numbers..... ....especially for what Gregorius has shown in parts of 2 seasons.. Both are still young incomplete players - we'll see how it works out.
I can't argue with that logic. The Yanx have nothing to lose in acquiring Gregorius. If he fails, oh well, all we lost was a Pitcher I liked, but was not dominating. I didn't see Fireworks, when Greene took to the mound. We could of kept him or traded him, and this I believe is the best option. He can play good defense. I see this as a set up to bring Scherzer into the Bronx....! I'm not dreaming either. Would one rather have Greene and Drew or Gregorius and Greene......its really that simple...!
__________________________________ Unless Greene progresses into a solid # 3 (?) ML starter...and we get to watch him pitch for Detroit in the playoffs. Of course all is forgiven if Gregorius turns into a nice .270 hitting SS with 10-15 HRs and plays excellent defense. lol By the way, what has kept him from playing/being a full time SS?
Earlier I posted that when Greene arrived at Spring Training someone needed so work with him on infield plays. And yep he had some shaky rookie moments. But I liked his attitude and thought he be improving as he went along. Nova, Subparthia and Tanaka to some degree are going to be on shaky ground. Cannot see the Yankees paying more big dollars to one of the "big three" and was hoping they'd resign McCarthy. So from that point I don't understand why they'd let Greene go unless someone in the front office is privy to a huge secret. On the other hand as pointed out I can appreciate the youth & economy of Gregorius over Drew whom I can't stand so it would free up money for other moves. Now that I have calmed down I will take a wait and see attitude. After the Montero Pineda trade it finally evolved that the Yankees got the best part of that deal lets hope this one goes that way as well. Whats done is done.
I've been wondering the same all morning long, especially after looking at his stats, and lack of games played on a consistent basis????????
I too hate giving up Greene... BUT.... Look at the young pitchers who've come to the show & then traded away (recently)... Who were major sucesses??? Ian Kennedy? Oestendorf (or however you spell it)? Or those let to sign elsewhere.... Joba? Mendoza? Hughes had a great year yes, but those traded...???
______________________________ Could be- could also be the Yanks will have more than one SS if Didi continues to be horrible vs LHP. 163 AB, .184/.257/.233, K 45........ HR 0 Another factor - the numbers and reports point to him being kinda mediocre defensively. I'm still hoping and slightly expecting him to improve with more playing time or he'll wind up in a platoon with Brendan Ryan. oops
________________________________ If the Yanks don't improve the SP rotation and this deal goes really bad for the Yanks,. ...this little old trade could sting Cashman hard. lol
...well, he'll only be facing LHers about 20-25% of the time...but yeah, I considered the platoon thing with DiDi too. But I'd rather let the kid play every day. ...he's still learning and I hope he'll figure things out, especially since he'll be hitting in a better line up and in a more hitter friendly park most of the time. Plus, like I said, maybe playing every day will actually help him. ...the Yanx coughed up a young pitcher to get him but we won't really be able to grade this trade for another year or so. If Greene continues to impress and if Gregorius struggles badly, yes, it will look like a bad trade. But it could also just as easily go the other way as well. ...we also need to keep in mind that this kid won't be in the #2 spot like Jeter...probably will bat 9th...so he won't have any pressure on him to be an offensive threat.
_____________________________________________ Agree. I'll be very disappointed if he doesn't do well vs RHP especially playing 81 at YS vs RHP: 484 AB, 13 HR .262 / .332 / .411
