Dish Network Corp. and Netflix Inc. said Wednesday that they reached a deal to integrate Netflix’s app into Dish’s latest set-top boxes, a significant boost to Netflix’s plans to expand its reach into U.S. pay-TV homes.

The agreement marks Netflix’s first such deal with a major U.S. pay-TV operator, giving the streaming video service easier access to Dish’s 14 million pay-TV customers. However, the Netflix app will only be available on Dish’s “second-generation” Hopper digital video recorders, and Dish declined to disclose how many customers have those boxes. The deal also doesn’t include a billing relationship, where Dish can bundle Netflix subscriptions along with Dish satellite-TV service on customers’ bills.

“Pairing Netflix with Hopper represents the consolidation of two incredible video experiences,” said Vivek Khemka, Dish’s senior vice president of product management.
