You guys do realize that there are 250,000 to 400,000 individuals earning more that $1M/yr in the US (numbers from 2007-2011). Baseball players are part of the 1%. Most of those other people do have a 20-50 year earning span, in the MLB its 5.6 years. Ballplayers and agents understand this fiscal reality and negotiate accordingly. Also in this group you can include top doctors and attorneys, most B movie and up Hollywood stars/agents/execs, other sports stars, TV &Radio personalities, ceos and execs of fortune 500 companies, elite builders/contractors, investors and speculators.....and on and on. Look, with baseball, you either have 30 uber wealthy ownership groups....or the current distributive wealth system. In the case of the MLBPA, I think they made a successful argument that owners didn't build baseball alone...its the player/performers that made significant contributions. Would you prefer that team remain private corporate entities and have profit sharing and no reported salaries?
Exactly. There are debt controls on ownership groups...ask the Wilpons, lol! Interesting, in corporate america, companies that pay employees ( that includes mgmt) more, tend to yield better ROI over the long term. Apple, Google, etc. Are top 10 in employee compensation. What does that say? Well short term profit taking yields cash, makes EBITDA look better. However its what you do with that cash over the long term, and investing in a stable/motivated/creative work force are what investors look for (directly and indirectly).
_________________________ Which is why the salaries are disgustingly obscene. These players aren't going to be applying for public assistance based on any 3 yr avg salary earning period. I would prefer to see more individual mlb owners dump these glorified bandits sooner than later and promote and/or give new (younger farm hands) prospects a chance. If this is truly a free market, then why were the "owners" sued for collusion in the past? I am certainly an advocate of the free market system - and also for the rights of those who risk losing everything in a business venture.
with the comparative pittance players get paid through their first few years, its only fair for them to get a little on the back end
Sorry my friend but not WHATEVER because the fans are the one's that get fucked in the end with the high ticket prices. So it does matter.
When your team payroll goes from $100M to $200M you've got to make up for it somewhere. Otherwise box seats would cost $100.00 instead of $1000.00. JMO.
the dodgers get something like 250 MM a year from local tv rights alone, ticket prices are likely pure profit
Well if they're doing okay getting money else where why ask for such ridiculous for tickets. Like I said JMO but I still think much of it has to do with the high salaries.
...I'd like to know what the Yanx take in during a sold out home game including the gate and concessions.
The Bums revenue from TWB-C; I posted right here during ST, with all the stats and facts. The Bums received 10 Million more than their entire payroll from TWB-C. Yet, have you forgotten the Bums also raised the AVERAGE ticket price anywhere from 70% to 125% per seat? So Yes, the Fans are the One and Only's who are paying the inflated price not just for excessively priced tickets. (Keep in mind it wasn't that long ago, one could sit in the OF bleachers for ONLY $3.00?). Today same seat cost $15-$25. Still a good deal but try to take a small family of 4 to a game, while trying to find tickets within your price range, being on the field level, not even behind home plate, not behind the dugout, but b/t the dugout and foul pole. Those tix are out of control. Then for only 2 peeps, ya' got the 42$ for 2 Dodger Dogs, 2 Sodas, 2 bags of Peanuts, and one ice cream bar. NTM-the 25$ parking. Programs, moreso Year Books, don't even mention them.... ..........the team still pays ZERO taxes to the City or County or State. They receive 100% of ALL REVENUES.... sick to say.....all concessions, all parking, all tix, then top it off with a sick pay out from TWB-C, which will increase yearly for the next 25 years. 8.6 Billion was the Monetary figure TWB paid to the Bums for broadcasting rights. Easily the price to buy a couple of MLB teams.
___________________ So what happens if/when the "fans" AFTER they stop showing up at the ballparks cancel their cable service - even if temporarily/indefinitely as a show of protest ? Hmmmmm? And now that we are in a new year, allow me, as a Yankee fan, to end the Madbum Giants honeymoon..... ......it could be a very ODD YEAR when the Giants win another WS without MADBUM pitching practically better than any pitcher in postseason history, without their best WS hitter (Sandoval), and not playing one of the weakest hitting teams (Royals) in the WS. I think it's about time the SF Giants revert back to their previous four decade status. Enjoy the 2014 run - it could the last for a long time. GO YANKS!
Give me a base salary, and bonuses, for "play-pay for performance"....NOTE: I did say a BASE SALARY, then incentives, for milestones, and/or pre-determined accomplishments. Then we can talk profit sharing. Tho' I'd really rather not have profit sharing at all. Smacks of Socialism, the Lib-tard front. But what is wrong with incentives. I believe in as much. cut my teeth on as much. A better way to get more cash than a bloated salary. A better way to get a higher level of play too....! Will a rabbit come out of its hole without the carrot.
I'll have to dig that up again...think I did a rough calc for Boston a ways back. You take avg attendance by avg tix price. I recall seeing somewhere that people spend roughly the same money on concessions as they do tickets, and that factors into how pricing is set. For major markets, I think its a safe assumption that stadium revenues are ancillary to media related revenue. Oh and let's also note that home teams split the gate with visitors. Thus its far more important to the Royals to have series vs the Yanks rather than the Jays. Thus the driver behind the new scheduling matrix and interleague play. As long as people watch games on TV, listen to the radio, and stream on the internet all the while getting exposed to the advertisers....the folks sitting in the stands are icing on the cake, not the main course. Not to turn this into an old guy/young guy pissing match, but fans in the stands just aren't that necessary anymore. If they were, they'd be building 75k+ capacity stadiums.
Yanks annual revenue is $461M. Doing the math, there is another $120M not accounted, that must include stadium and merchandize revenue. http://www.forbes.com/sites/mikeoza...-2014-led-by-new-york-yankees-at-2-5-billion/ http://www.forbes.com/sites/nathanv...tial-deal-would-value-network-at-3-4-billion/
