To Padres for good AA pitcher who may need TJ surgery. Anyone think Yankees trying to cut costs to make run at Scherzer?
Who we got in return (Johnny Barbato) for Kelley... http://pinstripedprospects.com/2014/who-is-johnny-barbato-4319
...the Johnny "Sausage" experiment might be a good long term gamble...big question about his elbow but he's very young so even if he needs TJ surgery he has time on his side. ...Kelley wasn't that great plus he'll be a FA next year, so t wasn't a big loss.
Addition by subtraction / Yanks dump his salary and his (two season totals as a Yankee) 4.46 era - 1.28 whip AND also open up his spot for one of their youngsters. I've got no problem with this move.
OK, on MLB trade rumors, it said Barbota was the first part of the deal reported... Does that mean it was Kelley for Barbota & a player to be named later? http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/12/padres-to-acquire-shawn-kelley.html
I've no problemo with this trade. Kelley wasn't as essential with his sub-par performance, moreso on paper, Kelley was needed at his best, and we never saw that much. I can't help but think, its beginning to look like a cleaning up of the Yanx. Almost like tossing some overboard, & not getting the equivalent in return. Are the rats fleeing the ship, or are the decks simply being swabbed? Damn, the Padres look like they're trying to buy a NL West Pennant, after so many down years. My take, they will still get their asses handed to them by the Bums and Giants...........so much for Compadres....! Not enough good pitching, or consistent hitting we will see this year. San Diego, 3rd at best in the NL West. Imagine if the Bums wound up with Max. They have the $$$ and have shown no consideration for becoming the 1st team in MLB to break the 400 Million $$$ mark.
The Dodgers payroll last season was a league leading $230M & even with the loss of Ramirez & Kemp, I think they still increased payroll with the signings of McCarthy, Rollins & Kendrick by about 10M. So you have to figure there current payroll is now around $240M with nothing to show for it. I just don't see them adding more payroll with the addition of Max. JMO.
_______________________________ Tossing the garbage overboard. In this case, the Yanks have every reason to believe they can get at least similar production at less cost with one of their young pitchers.
I said this on Facebook, but I'm baffled here... Even adding Scherzer is not enough to have 6 pitchers leave (Greene, Phelps, Kelley, McCarthy, Robertson, & Kuroda) via different routes & Barbato, Eovaldi, & Miller in.... 3 pitchers down in head count aspect regarding pitchers...
Yeah the math doesn't work for me either. All this on top of losing Prado IMO this team has gotten weaker during the off season. Chalk this all up as just ANOTHER great job by Cashman.
