Forget about Perron sc. Sather sits and watches and the Pens get better. The Pittsburgh Penguins, who have been looking for a top-six winger all season, finally got one Friday when they acquired David Perron from the Edmonton Oilers. In return, the rebuilding Oilers got Pittsburgh's first-round pick in the June draft plus forward Rob Klinkhammer. Perron has another year left on his deal, which carries a $3.812 million cap hit. He scored a career-high 28 goals in 78 games with the Oilers last season, although he has just five goals this season for the cellar-dwelling Oilers. The 26-year-old Perron played the first six years of his NHL career with the St. Louis Blues, where he twice posted 20-plus goal seasons.
Stinks that he went to Pitt and they get better. They have a lot of talent upfront, and a lot more grit this year as well. We'll see how that plays in the playoffs, and if MAF can get it done.
good deal for the Pens. I've liked Perron for a long time. We'll see what the Oilers do with this #1 pick, probably draft another one-way forward who needs to be introduced to the defensemen and goalie at the end of the games. And how can you not love Klinkhammer! That's a terrific hockey name.
He is not worth a first round pick. He's also awful defensively. Just makes it easier to score against them.
I would be okay with dealing a pick in the 20's for him, most likely mid 20's. And being awful defensively on that team isn't odd. Just like we said with Yakupov last week, I want to see how some of these more skilled Oilers play off of that team with some vets around them. And he won't be 27 until late May. I would take a chance on him for sure. And whether you like Perron specifically or not, he is exactly the kind of guy we need to take a chance on to add to our top 9. And I am sure it will take a similar package, maybe a little lesser, to get the forward we need.
Big deal about Perron. We have enough players like him. I would rather see Sather give a 1st rounder for a guy like Stewart, Fleischman, or Vermette.
Vermette would give them a 3rd line center and allow Hayes to move to wing. They need to win draws, the are one of the worst teams in the league at FO's. They can score goals, they have to get better at FO's Hagelin - Vermette - Hayes Miller - Moore - Stempniak Would be a deep bottom 6
I would be fine with Stewart, Fleischman, or Vermette as well. To me this isn't about Perron only, it's about the fact that we need another top 9 forward, and now is the time we should start looking. Stewart would be a great fit here for us. He has been mentioned previously. He has size. He can score 16-18 goals and 30-35 points. So he would fit in well as a 3rd line winger with size. But we cannot wait weeks. I bet the Sabres are looking to move him soon for the right price. Who knows if he lasts until the trade DL. Strike now...don't sit and wait 2 more months.
I don't see this as a guy that was going to help the Rangers. He's not a guy with any size, he's a lot of the same the Rangers already have and he's having a garbage season.
He's 6' tall and nearly 200 pounds. He's having a better season than Stewart. He had 28 goals last season. And I don't really get on him for this season considering the whole Oiler team is a joke. With that said, I don't fully disagree with you guys on Perron. I am not sure he was the right guy for us. My point is bigger picture we better get something done, and I wouldn't wait 2 months to do it.
I agree on Fleischmann or Stewart being guys that would be solid adds, but Ladd would be even more a fit, though he'd cost more. I thought a Perron/Petry package would be two solid adds in one shot, you get an upgrade from Hunwick. He hasn't been awful or anything but i don't think you ideally want him going into April. But yes, Sather can't sit around and be lazy till March 1st, when almost all of these guys will be gone.
Teams with deep teams can't afford to give away first and second round picks. You'll never be able to manage the cap. As it is, the Rangers have had to play 3 rookies this year just to work the cap next year. What the Rangers need the most is for Kreider to stop playing the regular season like a woman, Hayes to keep getting better, AV to play Miller consistent the rest of the year and Duclair to make the team next year and give them another finisher. Not to add a Perron.
We are talking about this year, not next year, so Duclair playing well next season while it would be nice means nothing for this season. We gave up the 29th pick in the draft last year to upgrade to MSL. First while you never want to give up 1st rounders, # 29 is not a big time top shelf pick. Second, and most importantly, we added Hayes and that made up for trading # 29. So I view it as we did NOT deal the #29th pick last season...I actually think we got a player who is better than # 29, so we gained. The upcoming draft we again lose our 1st, but I expect it to be in the 20's, or close to it, again. AND since Cally re-signed with TB we also get their 2nd, so we make up for that a little as well. So draft wise we are fine IMO. And getting guys like Hayes and Duclair to be players is a huge plus. This discussion goes back to a discussion we have had for a few years now. Draft versus going for it. I am always in the camp of going for it. As Hank and Girardi and Nash and Staal and MSL all get older the window gets smaller. That's the way it works. The Pens are aggressive every season, yet every season they are right there. Now they haven't made it to the SCF and only have one trip to the ECF in many years now, PLUS having Cindy and Malkin helps ensure you have a good team every season, but they are solid every season none the less. It is time for us to be aggressive here. Let's be flat out honest, outside of last season when his hand was sort of forced by Cally's crazy demands, when has Sather been aggressive during these past couple of seasons when we have had real chances to make cup runs? We know the epic fail by him the year we lost to the Devs. We know last season yes he added MSL, but nothing else, and MSL almost had to be done and was a natural fit after Cally got nuts. So how about for once he actually goes for it at the trade DL and adds the clear player we need to be legit...another top 9 forward with size. And maybe if we can fit it in, add another dman to battle for the 6th spot. The beauty of Stewart and Fleischmann is both are UFA's after the season. So no long term terrible deals to worry about. They both will get dealt...Stewart for sure and Fleischmann almost for sure unless the Panthers stay right there for the next 6-8 weeks...so get it done. Those guys or someone else...it is clear what we need on this team to be a legit SC contender, which we are not at the moment. If we can get a 3rd line we can count on to go along with very good 1st and 2nd lines, watch out. Then don't be an a** AV and play either Miller or Fast with Moore and Stemp as the 4th line and we'll be deep and ready to be a real serious contender this season.
Basically, the Rangers need to dump Glass, Stempniak and a J. Moore all in one deal for a player in the last year of his contract like Vermette or Boedker. However, there will be lots of stupid teams like Pitt giving up 1st round picks for those kind of forwards. Most I can see them doing is that same package for Stafford. Do not give Buffalo any picks or noticeable prospect for Stafford. He's underachieved there his entire career. It's basically a shot in the dark that maybe on this team with a strong supporting cast he can remove his head from his butt and do something.
If we can turn Glass, Stemp, Moore into Vermette, or Boedker, or Fleis, or Stewart...do it in a second, but I doubt we can pull that off. You and I never see eye to eye on this stuff dump, and haven't for years. You want to cluth every single draft pick for dear life as our top guys age and Hank's window gets smaller and smaller. I don't get caught up in the 22nd pick in a draft and think we should 100% flip some picks for what we need to actually win a cup. Your POV is interesting to me though. You are a hold every pick at every cost guy, yet you always talk about how the Rangers are great at finding players in the 2nd round and beyond. I would think if you had that much confidence in Sather and crew draft wise, you would say deal a pick to go for it because you believe they will mke good picks in the later rounds to make up for it. Plus we are talking picks in the 20's, not top 5 or top 10 picks. To me it is no coincidence that the year we made the SCF was the same year Sather actually made a real move at the trade DL to improve the team. Sure that deal kind of came together due to MSL wanting to be here, and Cally getting nuts, but none the less the year he made a trade to improve at the DL (we never make the SCF with Cally instead of MSL) is the year we make the SCF. And then he MORE than makes up for dealing the # 29 pick by getting a top 20 talent in Hayes. That should tell us something. It should tell us we need to improve at the DL to make another run. We know what we need. Now do it.
You never, ever, ever, look at the cap Chuck. Your go for it all mentality doesn't ever factor that it. They could do that last year because they still had cap room. They don't now. Stepan is going to want huge money. Zucc will want a long term deal at good money. Staal wants big money. Hagelin probably will want 3 plus million. They need their draft picks now to replace guys down the line so they can keep under the cap. You have to have young guys constantly being worked in to stay under the cap. You can't do that when you throw away your picks every year. The Rangers basically stepped in crap with the draft 2 years ago when they took Tambellini, Buchnevich, Duclair, Graves and Skapski. No matter how good your scouts are, that just doesn't happen. It's almost a fluke to get that many prospects playing so well without a 1st or 2nd round pick. That being said, they can't keep doing that.
And we do have young guys dump. You mentioned the young guys we have. We have a pipeline. We also don't have to give Hags 3 mill. We also don't have to give Staal nearly 6 mill. Step and Zucc I pay. On top of that, the 2016 1st round pick isn't helping now anyway. Maybe in 3 years he helps, but not in 2015. Not in 2016, the 22nd pick is unlikely to help in 2016. Maybe in 2017 or 2018...maybe. This is a good discussion...always has been...we just don't agree and never will as long as I see our window open. Not saying deal all our picks. Not saying F the draft. I am saying we can deal a pick here and there to improve the team to make cup runs. That is where we disagree. You want to clutch the picks, and I am willing to smartly deal a pick or picks here and there. I have faith in the guys drafting to find good players in later rounds. I also know the pick we'd trade won't be a top 10 pick, or even a top 15 pick, and maybe not even a top 20 pick. So I am not saying we are in the top 5, deal that pick for a shot to maybe slip into the playoffs. I am saying deal a potential top 20 or so pick for a chance to be a real cup contender. Teams do it. The Pens often. The Blues have done it. Teams do it and still find ways to be good year after year. That's how I view things. There is no promise you will be good every season. No promise you can have a real shot to win a cup every season. When you have a shot you have to take that shot smartly. We did NOT deal the 29th pick this past season IMO...that was taken care of when we got Hayes. We did, at the moment, deal the 2016 1st rounder, but we got a SCF run out of it, it will be a pick in the 20's +/-, AND we also now get an extra 2nd rounder back from TB, so that is a plus. The epic fail of Sather doing nothing the year we lost to the Devs still lingers...don't do it again this year Glen.
If there was ever a time where they were close it is now. Heartbreaking to lose in the Stanley Cup finals, and we all know it's tough to get back, especially the next season. However I think that the top 6is filled out, I think Sather needs to add a guy who will fill out the bottom 6. That is where Stewart and Vermette come in. Fleischman is a guy I would keep in The top six because he has immense offense of talent, and he is a veteran who reminds me of a guy like a Pisani, or Leino that could have a good playoff run. I do agree Chuck that the time is now, no point in saving pics on the team is this close, after this season who knows what will happen. I see your point dump that the team needs the draft picks because of the And how we have to pay all these young players now, however look at teams that win coups they go for it at the deadline which I think this team should do. Fuck the future right now is all that matters. Especially since they lost last year in the SCF in a way where if they got the bounces they could have one in five games
