He has stockpiled a good share of young inexpensive, power pitching strikeout relievers especially from the left side with a couple of his own farmhands included. http://yanksgoyard.com/2015/01/02/player-profile-chasen-shreve/
What does opening day rotation look like thus far? Tanaka, Pineda, CC....and? Eovaldi and then a platoon (that includes Crapuano) until Nova comes back? Sorry, they can't be out of the Scherzer sweepstakes.
...for me, it's Scherzer, and it's not even close. ...I've always liked Shields, but he's older and has thrown a ton of pitches. I wouldn't be disappointed if the Yanx signed him instead of Max but I really see Shields as more of a #2 than and ace. Again, he's a good pitcher, but he's no Max Scherzer.
OK, apparently the Yanks have told Adam Warren to come to ST and prepare to compete for a starting rotation spot. And its speculated they said the same to Esmil Rodgers. (From RAB). http://riveraveblues.com/2015/01/bullpen-depth-lead-adam-warren-working-starter-2015-112533/ So if the strategy is to stockpile lively young arms, then its possible that the Yanks sit out the FA starter situation. Hope for the best in April/May/June and have trade chips in July if contending. Changing mindset from the last 20 years, its not a given the Yanks actually expect to contend in 2015....could be back building waiting for Tex, Beltran and ARod to be off the books.
Warren is probably better suited being a SP.......as of now, he's a capable 6th-7th inn guy and I don't trust him in a close game after that...and I think the yankees agree.
Ya' know- (scratching head).....it IS beginning to look that way....! On the flip side, I'd like to see BOTH Max and Price, nail down 1, 2 and 3, counting Masahiro. The best of both worlds, a Southpaw, and a righty with good enough stuff to keep LH'd hitting off the bases.
I also feel with the current rotation, without committing genocide for a starting 5. Tanaka should do fine. C.C. I expect to be the same CC from last yr. I'd love to be proven wrong tho'. Pineda, Nova, I got a feeling neither will survive a full year, without DL time. Cappy, earned the name Crapuano when the Bums refused his services. He's not even fit for a 6th starter, a RP either. Still trying to figure out what a finesse pitcher means. I doubt he'll find the Greg Madduz school of pitching, for southpaws, either, not in this life or next. Not good when your looking at wiping out Tex, A-Roid, Beltran. I also doubt either of these 3 will be effective. Carlos may if he can only stay healthy, yet I"m beginning to doubt that too. I don't like this un-easy feeling this close to reporting to ST. In too many past decades, the Yanks only dilemma was like the Bums OF one last year. Too much talented SP's, or is there such a thing?
We said that last year. My concern is that Cashman thinks he skillfully built a rotation last year and doesn't realize how lucky he got. Although given that McCarthy, Kuroda, Phelps and Greene are gone....maybe he's learned the "lightning in a bottle" lesson? Thus far 2015 is shaping up to be a development year....
...well, you just know that Boras is gonna milk it for all he can so he might string it along for awhile...but yeah, I think things will break loose for Scherzer and Shields in the next 2 weeks.
http://www.springtrainingonline.com/reporting-dates/ P&C reporting dates approaching fast. Need time to find a place to live (ST & regular season), situate the wife/family, etc. 46-47 days left. Now with his contract he'd be able to close escrow in 10-30days (all cash deal...if he buys), but not a lot of time left to be completely changing venues. After looking at the calendar, you're point regarding Max going back to Detroit the longer this drags on....its nuts on.
Why wow? I said approx 90 wins which means it could also be a couple LESS or more wins. They won 84 g last year with a miserable feeble offense and middle of the road overral pitching - I expect better this year.
