I've been wanting to do this for a couple of years, here it is. I have made a spreadsheet and plot of the teams that have made it to the NBA finals in the last 10 years with their ORtG and DRtG rankings. Just a quick reminder, larger numbers are bad, so the 3 teams off to the right are defense-oriented teams with poor offenses. Some notes: No team has made it to the NBA finals in the last 10 years finishing worse than 12 best defense. The Blazers on 1/7/15 had an DRtG Ranking of 2nd, and an ORtG Ranking of 10th. 13 of the 20 teams had a top 10 defense and a top 10 offense. The average ORtG+DRtG was 12.9 (Blazers currently 10+2=12) spreadsheet here I have also compiled data on conference finalists for the last 10 years, see the spreadsheet.
Sweet spread bro! I hope our team gets our offense going. I think it will when Lopez and freeland get back. It's really important to have our bigs to keep our offensive efficiency. With offensive rebound and low post scoring. Freeland and Lopez are our better offensive rebounders
DRTG has a stronger collation than ORTG. 13 of the 20 were top 5 in DRTG. The top 5 in DRTG are Golden State, Houston, Portland, Milwaukee, & Washington. Only GSW, Portland, Atlanta, & Chicago are top 10 in both.
Awesome thread! Says a lot and thanks for taking the time to put this together! Trophy thread of the day!
First of all, nice job. Repped... Errrr liked. Anyway... This is easy for me to say since I won't be the one doing the work but if you do a few more of these with other categories you will start to see an even more clear picture of who is legit. Like rebounding, assists, free throw shooting and three point shooting for example . Then see which teams are in the most categories. That would be sweet.
For as much crap as Houston gets (on here), they are an improved team from last years team. Not necessarily improved in a manner that could win them a title, but improved none the less. Portlands spot in the O and D rankings will change a bit I think, but once Lopez is back, and Freeland is back, it should level out. However, has it dropped any significant amount since Lopez went down?
This is what I hope is the final four. All teams with great d and decent O. It would be an awesome matchup on both ends
That's the crazy thing! It really hasn't! Only our offense has suffered, which is what's expected when your top two offensive rebounders are out with injury.
Just imagine when Lopez and Freehand come backs?!?!?! We could be 1st in defensive rating and top 5 in offensive rating too!
The stats are misleading. We've mostly played crap teams since Lopez has been out and especially Freeland. Its not sustainable long term in my opinion but had been a fun stretch.
After years of missing the playoffs, I'm happy to be in the top 5 in both offense and defense, even if it is misleading. However, because of our injuries, I don't think it is. I think it's more like Damian Lillard saying "you better not let us stay close in the 4th or I'll take over."
Trade Rolo! Trade Rolo! But in all seriousness its a great sign that our good defense is getting even better overall and not just relying on Rolo and Freeland
Not quite sure I agree with you there. We played OKC, SAS, Atlanta, TOR, HOU, and NOLA. Since Lopez went down, we've played a total of 13 games. 6 out of the 13 games were good teams. Don't get me wrong here. Lopez and Freeland are absolutely necessary to sustain good defense, but we've held our own so far, against really good teams too.
OKC and NOP are not good teams (not bad, but not good). We lost to ATL and HOU. The fact remains that we've largely feasted on bad teams.
This is not about win/loss. This was about Drtg. So that argument holds no ground. I don't want you to go off topic like the time when you replied that Kaman and Matthews have a better post up game than Aldridge.
