The Rangers and Marc Staal are closing in a on SIX-YEAR contract extension to keep Staal with the Rangers. Staal is expected to have a cap hit between $5.6 and $5.9 million. Rangers assistant GM Jeff Gorton had a “productive meeting” with Staal’s agent on Wednesday that helped move the talks along.
Not sure how I feel about this. Seems like a big cap hit to me, more money and years than Girardi which doesn't surprise me due to age. I will put my belief in Gorton and Sather here and hope things work out. We now have a lot of dmen locked up long term. McD, Girardi, Staal, and even Klein. I guess our D is set the next 3 seasons at least. That is a plus. Now go get a forward....
Staal’s cap hit is expected to be $5.7 million. (McKenzie) The “heavy lifting” on the negotiating is done but there is still paper work to do. (McKenzie) The deal has been agreed to in principle. (Friedman)
Staal has a full No-Trade Clause for the first three-years of his contract and then a partial No-Trade Clause for the final three-years. He also can’t be placed on waivers throughout the deal. (LeBrun) The contract is worth north of $5.7 million per year, according to Pierre LeBrun.
Good deal. Nobody should whine about this. He is an important member of the team and he is what this team needs if they want to win a cup
Well, I'm not sure how they are going to fit under the cap when 4 of our six defenseman are making over 4 million year. Maybe they know St. Louis isn't coming back or will come back for cheap. Maybe they know they are going to deal a player like Hagelin and Zucc. I don't know how they can possibly get under the cap with all these guys. Hagelin and Zucc together probably will make close to 7 million. That's 7 million they don't have.
not happy with this contract, I am very concerned that he will not get to the level he once was projected to get to.
I guess they're not seeing that he's not the same player anymore. Hopefully it works out but that's alot of years tied up in him and Girardi. Maybe it'll help get Eric in fa.
To me MSL only comes back if he takes a big discount. No way I resign him for more than 3 mill or so per...max 3.5. Zucc I want back, and I believe he will be back unless he gets crazy. Stepan will be back. Hopefully long term deal. Hags is the guy I would move on from unless he stays in the 2's cap hit wise.
STL will be back. He lives in Greenwich which is one of the richest towns in America and its 30 minutes from his job. He'll take a pay cut
why? just because he owns a home in Greenwich that means nothing....what if he decides he wants to finish his career in his home town, Montreal? Why does everyone assume he would give a discount to stay in New York?
I happen to agree strud. He will take less. As for the deal overall, no one has been harder on me than Staal, but I am not sure how to feel about this. I don't think I like it because we already have a few dmen locked up. But I also think Staal has been playing really well, so I don't hate having him locked up. And he is only 28. And the deal isn't 6 mill per like I feared, he did take a home town discount. So I just don't know. I think I am on the side of not liking this, but I don't hate it like I thought I would.
They show his family in MSG all the time.looks like they are raising the kids in Greenwich and he wants to be close to home. As for MTL I think that ship has sailed
MSL has said many times this is where he wants to be. He forced a trade to one team and one team only last season. Now put your money where you mouth is Marty. Take 3 mill or so for a season and be happy. Do the team a solid. As for Staal, I like having the top 4 dmen locked up for a few years now. I like the fact that this deal takes him to 34 or so, not 36 or 37, so right in his prime years for us. I like the fact that he left clear money on the table. Could have gotten 6.5 per I bet somewhere else. So I like all of that. We are set on D for years now. I don't like the injury concussion risk. I also don't know if I like all these dmen locked up for years, which contradicts what I said above. That is why I am torn. Don't love it or hate it. Now go get a forward Glen...
Why does Sather continue to be a dumbass and give out no trade clauses. Honestly. Tell Staal, you've had 2 major concussions. You lost partial vision in your eye. If you can do better than 5 million for 5-6 years on the FA market, go ahead. Sather needs to make it a team policy. No trade clauses will no longer be included in contracts.
Another year or two? In your opinion he already is broken down sc. I actually think it is funny the way you hate Girardi. Gives me a good laugh.
You know what is pretty amazing, Hunwick is a + 10 (tied for the 5th best on the team). You don't just get lucky to be a + 10 through 1/2 the season. He has played well. Most importantly he has played smart. Makes the high % play and just gets the puck out. He also has 8 assists, and many near goals, he has been snakebitten to score his first Ranger goal. Meanwhile Moore is a +/- 0 and only has 4 assists (O is supposed to be his advantage over Hunwick). I'm sorry but three things come to mind here...1. The 6th dman battle is no contest, Hunwick has been much better. 2. Hunwick is solid and I have no issue with him being my 6th dman for the playoffs. 3. I would trade Moore this season and see if I could package him to add the forward we need. The risk is then we have no decent 7th dman, but that's where Sather needs to make another minor move to add a solid depth dman in case of injury.
