Remember we are talking about the Bottom 6. Winnik would add size and PK ability to the team. For a bottom 6 player he gets a lot of assists. I think he would be a great role player to add. Vermette would be great too because he does a little of everything and plays with an edge. Acquiring both would be great but that would kick out 2 of Miller-Fast-Stempniak

Michael Traikos of the National Post: Six Maple Leafs that could be traded after the All-Star break.

Tyler Bozak - he’s at least a second- or third-line center who is good on the draw, can kill penalties and can play on the power play.
Jake Gardiner – Depends on what they do with Dion Phaneuf and Cody Franson. Would want a young player in return, preferably a center. Could he be part of a package for Ryan O’Reilly?
Joffrey Lupul – when he’s healthy, he can produce. He has three-years left at $5.25 million cap hit. The Leafs might have to take a salary back or retain some.
Mike Santorelli - they should consider re-signing him, but can they afford it? He will likely ask for something in the $3 million a season range. Teams that are looking for depth could be interested.
Daniel Winnik – he’s recorded 19 points at even strength. He can kill penalties and will be looking for a pay increase next season. Could get a 2nd or 3rd round pick for him.
James Reimer – he makes $2.3 million, which is a bit much for a back up. Goalies don’t have a lot of resale value and he has a .906 SV% and 3.32 GAA

    Winnik and Santorelli please...:).

Fast or McIlrath, a mid prospect, and a 2nd in 2016 for the duo. If they wanted an extra 4th or 5th this year so be it.

I personally think Stempniak will be a valuable vet come playoff time and should get the minutes. Fast will definately sit and Hayes probably too if the trade happens.

Problem with trading at the deadline involves many things. One, teams that suck have a pissed off, unreasonable GM. Two, those GM's are probably worried about their jobs so they feel the need to get back tons of picks and prospect to give their fans hope. Third, you always have about 10 teams that think they can win it all and will give up the world for players who aren't all that good. Four, most the players available are either rentals or bad contracts that nobody wants.

I always hate deadline deals. I wish GM's made more trades at the draft and in the off-season.

Which to me is all the more reason to strike now with the Leafs. I'm telling you if Sather made a good solid offer Shanny would deal now. That is why I pass on Vermette. Maloney is going to hold and hold until right up to the DL. We can get in now with the Leafs and get it done 4 weeks before the DL. That would be my plan. Strike now and get Shanny to pull the trigger.

Gotta think the Rangers are looking at a player on the last year of their contract.

McIlrath seems to be playing much better now according to those who watch him. Some stay he still needs to distribute the puck quicker.

Amazing how the team stayed healthy so far this year.

We had the early stretch when 3 or 4 dmen were out for multiple games, but outside of that pretty healthy. But let's remember McD, Stepan, Boyle have all missed 11 games at least.

I think the time to deal McIlrath is now. I have to think the Leafs would like him given their terrible D. McIlrath, a 2nd or 3rd round pick, another mid level prospect should be able to get us Sant and Winnick. Maybe throw in an extra 4th or 5th rounder. That would be a good haul for the Leafs for two guys who are UFA's this summer.

However, would it be wise for the Rangers. After next year Boyle is done and there is no right handed defenseman in the system other than McIlrath who could possibly make the pro's.

Here is why I think it is 100% wise. McD, Girardi, Staal, and Klein are all locked up for years. So that is a very good top 4. With the 3rd pair we will find players to fill those slots no issue IMO. You can always find decent 3rd pair guys. Our top 4 is set for years.

To me now is 100000% the time to move McIlrath. Scored last night as well.

If Boyle was up after this year I'd say maybe, but we're talking two years away now. Sather looks like he's figured out a way to keep Klein and Staal, which I honestly didnt think was possible. As I see it now Klein will be moving up, so you can't not make a trade based on a potential problem on the 3rd defensive pair two years down the line.

Having said that, I dont necessarily want to give McIlrath away for 2 rentals. Id rather use him in a Bozak deal.

McIlrath was such a project at one time I felt a defenseman like him could be in the AHL to 23 or 24 and still carve out a nice pro career because of the style he plays. He's 22 now. The Red Wings have kept plenty of prospects in the AHL from 22 to 24 than are now playing well. Nyquist was a prime example. So maybe he will turn out to be something. However, when Sather signed Boyle to a 2 year contract. showed me he wasn't high on McIlrath any longer.

The issue with Bozak is the cap Prod. How do we make that work? No shot we can keep Zucc if we deal for Bozak. And how do we fit Bozak in this season? We dealing Hags? Okay, all good, but did we really help our depth if we deal Hags? There are bigger issues with getting Bozak...cap issues.

This is a win now team. We have a few good young players close to help with the cap next season. If we added Sant and Winnik I think we are in the cup fav discussion for sure. We'd have a ton of depth upfront that we clearly lack now. And I would love to resign Winnik also if he isn't crazy with his demands. He is exactly the kind of guy you like to have for playoff runs.
