New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and his allies have started a political action committee, taking the first concrete step toward launching a presidential bid and joining the battle for the Republican Party's top donors.

The PAC, called Leadership Matters for America, will allow Christie to build a political team and start to collect money ahead of a 2016 bid. In a mission statement, the PAC organizers said they will work "on entitlement spending at every level of government and ensure that every child, no matter their zip code, has access to a quality education." Details on the new PAC first were reported by The Wall Street Journal.

Christie reportedly has lined up several key Republicans to take on fundraising duties, including Texas investor Ray Washburne as finance chairman, and Phil Cox, the outgoing executive director of the Republican Governors Association, as a top adviser to the PAC.
