Martin Hanzal would fit the Rangers need for a center with size. (Newsday) Hanzal is 6-6, 226 and has 105 hits this season in 37 games and has won 56.5% of the faceoffs he has taken (346 out of 612). He has 8 goals and 16 assists and averages 17:44 per game, 2:05 on the PP and 1:19 on the PK. Now I don't want to deal Miller, but the plus regarding this deal is Hanzal is a perfect # 3 C for us. He would be the perfect guy to slot in after Stepan and Brassard. He has very good size. He is very good on faceoffs. And he is signed for two more years after this year with a very reasonable 3.1 mill cap hit, meaning not a rental and he can help us for a few seasons which is key if you deal Miller. Then you throw in Moore, who will be gone this summer anyway, and a mid round pick. I actually think I'd make this deal. Then turn around and deal a 2nd or 3rd and a mid prospect for another depth forward (Winnik) and away we go.
Nash/Brass/Zucc Kreider/Stepan/MSL Hags/Hanzal/Hayes Winnik/Moore/Stemp or Fast That is a top 9 you can win a cup with (mix and match however you like). And you send Glass down saving money on the cap so we can fit Winnik in. That 4th line looks really good to me as well with Winnik and Moore as the anchors.
Other pluses regarding Hanzal. He will be 28 in 3 weeks, which means he is not old by any stretch. We'd get him at 28, 29, and 30 in the playoffs at least (and maybe more if we resign him). And I claim if we added Hanzal one of our biggest issues last season, depth/ability down the middle, becomes a huge strength. Also allows us to move Hayes to the wing for a few years until he gets more comfortable in the NHL. So minimum the next two seasons after this one we'd have Stepan, Brassard, and Hanzal down the middle...that is real nice. The only way I can see Sather not liking this deal is if him/AV are dead set on having Hayes play C and they view this as a hinderance to that. Outside of that I really would welcome this trade even though I am a big fan of what Miller can become in 2 years. I also think Zona makes this deal. They get a young player like Miller. Get a young dman with upside, who they can control as an RFA, in Moore. And add a mid level pick, maybe a 4th or 5th rounder. I would think we'd need to add another depth forward for sure as I mentioned, Winnik fits the bill, and I would also say maybe another depth dman to pair with Hunwick at 6/7.
I see Newsday has its head up its ass. I brought up Hanzal almost a month ago. People who cover hockey in the media are quite stupid. It takes them a while to catch up to us. Miller is one of the very few players I would trade Hanzal for. However, Hanzal would have to sign a 2 year extension before the deal is done. Have to have him locked up for 4 years at the least.
Rules say you cannot sign an extension prior to going into the last season of a deal, so Hanzal CANNOT sign an extension until next summer...the summer of 2016...or later as he enters the final year of his contract. But I agree with you, I would deal Miller for Hanzal. I think he is exactly what we need and make us very strong down the middle, which is huge. And on faceoffs we'd have Hanzal and Moore. Then add another solid forward for the 4th line, and away we go.
No, you are not understanding. You said you would need him to sign a two year extension right away, I am telling you by rule that cannot happen. You cannot sign an extension until you are down to 1 year left on your contract. So Hanzal CANNOT sign an extension until the summer of 2016 or later. So you'd have to deal for him now knowing you'd have him for at least the next two seasons after this one, and can try to work out an extension with him after next season at the earliest.
I would still deal Miller for him. He is a perfect fit for us in every way. Then worry about resigning him in two years. I am sure if we do well as a team he will stay if we want him to stay.
I would love this trade but see absolutely no reason for the Yotes to make it. I could be wrong but Hanzal seems like the kind of guy they would want to keep around during a rebuild, especially at that contract.
I brought him up a few days ago too.lol He seems to be attainable more than Vermette unless they are willing to trade Hagelin. I don't think the Coyotes care about keeping him around at his age as long as they get young assets back.
Not sure Prod. It isn't like Hanzal is some big time player. I would say he is a # 2/3 C. A 15 or so goal 40-45 or so type player. No doubt there is value there, but he is not some big time player. He has two years left on his deal yes, but Zona is not ready to win right now, so during those 2 years who knows how good they will be. But I do agree with you in the sense that it will take a very good offer to get Hanzal, you aren't dealing a pick and mid-prospect for him. That is why it would take Miller, a 1st rounder from a few years ago. It would take Moore, a dman with potential who can be controlled for a while longer as a RFA (could also be valuable since they may try and deal a dman this summer maybe Yandle...and may lose Michalek as well). And it would take another pick and/or a prospect as well. Maybe a 3rd or 4th round pick and a mid-prospect. So Hanzal would not be cheap, and Zona would want a lot I agree. But I think he is worth that for us. I would do that and then flip a 2nd rounder for another forward.
I don't think he's the type of guy they want to keep around at all. He's 27. He's a bigger player. I see Arizona being 5 years away min. They have no goalie. They have almost no offensive players. In 2 years Hanzal will probably want a long term, 5 million deal. Something the Yotes won't commit to. The time for them to move Hanzal is now. Not sure a 2nd, Miller and J. Moore would get it done. They might want a 2, Miller and a prospect like Lindberg or Tambellini.
I wouldn't give up a 2nd and Miller (unless they gave me back another forward I could use for depth). I would give up a 3rd, Miller, Moore, and a mid-prospect. I want to keep a 2nd to move in another deal for a little more depth. Then we'd still have a 2nd round pick since we have two. I think Moore would interest Zona as well considering they may move/lose some dmen.
I'm a big Miller guy but the system if Tambellini doesn't come through is void of top 3 line centers. So, Sather might be looking to get one of these guys who he can have long term.
Speaks for itself, if you have Brass, Step, and Hanzal down the middle that is a strength. I still think long term the team views Hayes as a C though. Wonder how that factors in. I think you can now make the case you move Miller for the right player.
