http://espn.go.com/new-york/mlb/story/_/id/12331240/new-york-yankees-retire-andy-pettitte-no-46 ...he was a good pitcher but sometimes I think the Yanx get out of hand with retiring #s.
I agree, they really need to curb this honor which started getting out of hand as soon as they put Reggie's # out there.
I too think the Yanx have got out of control retiring more jerseys than necessary in some cases. With Pettitte alone, it would seem redundant, tho' he had some of the best Post Season Numbers of any Pitcher(s)....and was a big game Pitcher no doubt..... Yet, I like the idea of lumping all 4 of the backbone of the Yanx for those 1990 thru the 2009 era. Jeter, Mo', Posada, Pettitte, and of course add Bernie. Bernies contributions for those great 90s W.S. Games and Championships were pretty integral to their success. IMO.
all core four plus Bernie getting retired...enough is enough...Bernie is my favorite player of all time but come on, retired numbers should really be about the greatest of the greats...lifetime Yankee HOFers IMO. Want to recognize them and have a day..have a plaque..fine..but to take the number out of circulation is just dumb and smells like a money grab
Holy crap a BigAl sighting. Welcome back. And like I said, it started getting out of hand once they retired Reggie's number.
thanks.....ive ventured over here now and then...when I heard they are retiring all the numbers I figured I see what you guys would say
You'd probably be better off as an Islander fan but hey, it looks like they're both going to the playoffs.
One of the more exciting games I've seen in a while tonight. Yes, screw the Islanders. As for Pettitte, Posada and Bernie I love them but retiring all their numbers to me is just a bit much.
If it were up to me, about 1/2 these numbers would still be available; 1 Billy Martin August 10th, 1986 2 Derek Jeter ???? 3 Babe Ruth June 13th, 1948 4 Lou Gehrig July 4th, 1939** 5 Joe DiMaggio April 18th, 1952 6 Joe Torre August 23, 2014 7 Mickey Mantle June 8th, 1969 8 Yogi Berra July 22nd, 1972 8 Bill Dickey July 22nd, 1972 9 Roger Maris July 22nd, 1984* 10 Phil Rizzuto August 4th, 1985 15 Thurman Munson September 20th, 1980 16 Whitey Ford August 3rd, 1974 23 Don Mattingly August 31st, 1997 32 Elston Howard July 22nd, 1984* 37 Casey Stengel August 8th, 1970 42 Mariano Rivera September 22, 2013 44 Reggie Jackson August 14th, 1993 49 Ron Guidry August 23rd, 2003 46 Andy Pettitte ?????
I count 7 that I wouldn't have retired, #1 - Billy Martin - Good Mgr but seriously his revolving door for the job became a joke. = Plaque only. #9 - Roger Maris - 1961. Yes a great accomplishment but one or two great seasons shouldn't entitle you to such an honor. = Plaque only #10 - Phil Rizzuto - Over 50 years with the team & just a fun broadcaster. = Plaque only. #23 - Don Mattingly - I'm on the fence here, yes a lifetime Yankee & 5-6 years where he was untouchable but, is that enough? = Plaque only #32 - Elston Howard - If I'm being honest I think he's only there because he was the first black player for the Yankees. Sorry but = Plaque only #44 - Reggie Jackson - 3 good years & one great WS game, Sorry but not enough. This was a joke. = Not even a plaque. #49 - Ron Guidry - A lifetime Yankee but like Mattingly, not enough. = Plaque only
...I'd also add Stengel's #37 to that list. ...and I'm sure I'll get heat about it, but I'd add #42 for Jackie...retire it for Mo?...yeah, probably. But I'm sorry, MLB mandating that every team retire Robinson's # is simply admitting what we already know, which is that MLB was wrong in excluding blacks from the game.
