I don't fully disagree with you on Winnik, he would add some size and grit as a 4th line guy, but does not fully fill the faceoff need or the 3rd line scorer need. So I can see Winnik not being the ideal fit for us if we are adding 1 player only. He is almost 49% on draws this season though at 88-92. Anisimov wouldn't be a terrible fit. Then you can play him on the 3rd line with Hags and Hayes. I think they are now focused on adding a top 9 forward that can play wing or C and win faceoffs. Vermette would be their 1st choice if they can afford him. Anisimov is that type of player, but he has a year left with a 3.1 mill cap hit, so we may not want that. Glencross is a guy we could use, but not a FO guy. I think that is the focus. If I were a betting man I think Vermette is the main focus for Sather. He's on pace for 20/50 this year after 24/45 last year. He also wins 56% of his faceoffs. He really is the perfect guy if we can find a match with Zona. I think we can make the cap work, send down or deal away Stemp and maybe Zona can hold a little cap hit, but can we find the pieces they want? That is the question.
If you truly look at things honestly Vermette is such a perfect fit. He does exactly what we need. Vet guy. No long term strings. Wins FO's. Can score 18-20 goals. Really fits like a glove. If you gave us Vermette I think we'd be the fav in the East, assuming Hank is back. I wouldn't give up Miller or Duclair or Buch for Vermette, but outside of that I would offer whatever needed to get him. A 2nd rounder, another decent pick, a couple of solid prospects. I think he would be such a great fit for us. If what we have seen from Hayes recenty is real, he has been great and is using his size now, our 3rd line would be better than last season with Hags/Vermette/Hayes. That is a VERY good 3rd line. All can score 15 goals or more over a full season. Then have Miller/Moore/Fast in the 4th line mix. Maybe have Zona throw in Moss or Crombeen for some size. It is a good match.
I realize they lost Parise and Kovalchuk screwed the Devils. That being said Lou has been incompetent with his moves. He gave Clowe a dumb contract and the guys career may be over. Ryder never plays and Havlat was another stab in the dark that didn't work. The guys in the minors have amounted to nothing.
100%. That is why the Devs are a joke. Losing good top players, and the NHL has passed Lou by. That's it with the Devs. That Clowe deal was awesome. 5 years for a guy who had missed MAJOR parts of the previous 2 seasons with concussions, now his career is over I think. We all laughed on here the day he signed that deal. It is not 2004 and earlier anymore Lou...
They are neck and neck with the Isles now. If we added Vermette it would be a boost for us. I know the myth in here is the Isles are much better, but it isn't true. 100% they can beat us in a series, but we can beat them also. Two close very good teams IMO. Vermette would give us a better chance to beat them I think.
Sure we 'could' beat them and there's not a huge difference but the Isles are a deeper team this year.
Right, so adding Vermette would go a LONG way in making us deeper to match them in depth. I would go as far to say if we added Vermette we would be deeper, or worst case have the same amount of depth. Hags/Vermette/Hayes is a heck of a 3rd line (all 15 goal guys). And if we played Miller on the 4th line with Moore the 4th line would have ability as well.
If we play the Isles I would expect it to be a long drawn out series whether we add Vermette or not. Some real good hockey. A lot of fun for the fans.
Isles have a good team but they have Halak in goal. Let's not go crazy here. That guy could get lit up in a series I have a feeling Vermette will end up in NY for a 2nd rounder and prospect
That would be cool, hopefully it would turn out like 94 and not every other series they played. Oh yeah 79 too.
Exactly Dis. I am not saying we beat the Isles, certainly they can win, but that would be a LONG toss-up series as is right now. If we add the forward depth we need, I think it would give us a little edge in the playoffs. Plus we have Hank and a clear experience edge as well (don't undersell that). I am also starting to think we get Vermette as well. Maloney and Sather have a great relationship. I think Vermette is the perfect fit for us. We have an extra 2nd to deal. We have some solid mid to decent prospects to deal. Unless some team blows Maloney away and we are sitting here afterwards saying yeah we couldn't have topped that, I think we have a great chance to add Vermette, and he would fit like a glove IMO.
Because if the Rangers are going to overpay for a role player, than the other team sure as hell better take back Glass. What the heck is the point of giving up a good prospect and a 2nd if you can't dump Glass. It's pointless. Nashville badly overpaid but they made Toronto take Jokinen who was useless. The Knicks made Cleveland take that imbecile J.R. Smith to get Shumpert.
I was reading the Leafs wanted Joki because they feel they can flip him for another pick before the DL. Either way he is a UFA after this season, so no harm no foul. Issue with Glass is 2 more years left on his deal. That's the issue there. Not sure I see the direct connection in saying "What the heck is the point of giving up a good prospect and a 2nd if you can't dump Glass. It's pointless." I mean sure we should try to dump Glass if someone is dumb enough to take him, but it wouldn't make the deal to add forward depth pointless if we couldn't dump Glass. Frankly I would be shocked if Zona took Glass back if we were able to get Vermette. Why would they want 2 more years of Glass. It is more likely we can include Stemp to balance off some cap since he is a UFA this summer anyway.
I'm glad some of you are running this team. If you were, the team would have no draft picks over a 5 year span and probably still wouldn't win anything. The reality is that the second era is being built. The no Henrik era. Where Halverson of Shesterkin is the goalie. Where Graves, McDonagh, Skei and Walcott will be the core of the defense. Rangers aren't going to piss that away for role players. Hopefully Sather can get out of his jackass no trade clauses with some players so he can dump them for picks and prospects down the line. People on this board want to throw away second round picks like they are useless. Dubinsky and Anisimov were 2nd rounders and got the team Nash. Sauer was a second rounder and I honestly think they would have a cup by now if he didn't get hurt. He was that good. Stepan was a second round draft pick. Throwing away those picks for role players who are probably rentals is moronic. Getting a Backlund I can see because he can be the third line center.
Let's meet up in 2018 when you want to try and win a cup dump. We can sit with Hank who will be almost retired by then. The only issue I will have is what will we do about 2020? You do bring up a good point though. All these people in here saying deal all our picks, and deal Miller, Duclair, Buch, Skjei are crazy. It is not stop in here. I have seen a ton of posts saying deal all the picks and all the kids. Bring back rental players, and deal Duclair and Miller for them. I don't get it. Crazy fans in here wanting to deal all the youth. Posts are all over the board. Crazy stuff. Funny...
There are some desperate traders on this board. Winnik is not worth a 2nd round pick. He has been inconsistent, like a thousand NHLers. These GMs think they are trading premier players. I can't wait to see which team bites on Kessel. They will pay dearly.LOL And to all who want the Rangers to trade their picks and their young players in the system, you have no clue how to have a continuous winning hockey team.
