Actually Philly could've achieved that buy splitting the amount in bonus form to it's current players but they opted to sign TRob for the rest of the season.
Okay here is where i got it. Probably should have put this up there from the beginning but i figured you had all read the same thing. http://www.oregonlive.com/nba/index.ssf/2015/02/thomas_robinson_claimed_off_wa.html This portion of the statement is a direct quote from Woj "The Sixers needed the sum of Robinson's remaining salary to honor the obligations of the collective bargaining agreement that dictate a team needs to reach within 90 percent of the NBA's salary floor before season's end - or pay out that shortfall amount equally among the rest of the players on the roster." The rest i picked from the story and made the statement "Philly took him to clear cap restrictions...." " .....He can sign wherever" Now exactly where is that "Wrong" ?
It seems from that, that they had the choice, and either option would have satisfied the collective bargaining agreement. How pissed would their players be if they could have split $3+ million dollars among them, but management decided to sign a guy for $3.6million, then cut him and pay him instead. But it is the 76ers, so there's that....
That's what I thought, too. If the money is the same to the organization either way, why not at least throw a little "thank you for playing for our sucky ass team" money to your players? Asshats.
