The best thing Betances can do this spring is: Have Mo' show Dellin how to throw that trademark cutter......!
...gonna be interesting to see if Betances can go from the set up role to the closer's role...D-Rob was unreal in the set up role for Mo...but at times was not as good at closing games out.
I know many people have said they believe that the closer's role should not be a scripted black and white thing....and while it has some validity, I'm just wondering how each individual player would react to it? I mean does Girardi get Betances warmed up in a possible entry into the 7-8th innings but later decides he doesn't need him for either/both of those innings...and then has him warm up again in the 9th to bring him in to put out a crucial 1 out, 2 men on situation to close out the game? ...seems to me that could create some problems.
I'm also not a fan of the rumored 6 man rotation. Hell for starters I can't even guess who the 6 would be, There's CC, Tanaka, Pineda, Evoldi & who? Warren? and who? This team will have enough trouble putting together a competitive 5 man rotation let alone 6
His pitchers hated it.....and him, tried to get him fired. Read it in a book years ago, don't recall which one.
...the problem I'd have with it is that if you have really strong #1 and #2 starters, while you'd be resting their arms a day longer, you'd also be taking 5-6 starts away from them every year.
That would also be my problem. I mean why pitch Clem Kadiddlehoffer on day 6 when you have rested & very productive Clay Kershaw that could go?
...exactly...and you also never know how the starts will fall when playing someone who may ultimately knock you out of the playoffs because in a 3 game series they missed facing someone like Kershaw and faced and beat "Clem" instead.
Yep, and I'm still whining...... Never been a fan of 5 Man Rotations; would still like to see a early 70s style of Complete Game Pitchers, ie those Orioles SP's, truly incredible, to have 4 SP's all with 20 or + Wins.....
I agree Rob. He's a fun stat.................20 game winners by decade, 1940-1949 = 54 (9 - 25 game winners) 1950-1959 = 59 (2 - 25 game winners) 1960-1969 = 73 (11 - 25 game winners) 1970-1979 = 93 (5 - 25 game winners) 1980-1989 = 36 (1 - 25 game winner) 1990-1999 = 34 (1 - 25 game winner) 2000-2009 = 33 ( NONE ) 2010-2014 (5 years) = 14 ( NONE )
Incredible, thanks for putting together the stats Rick...... I guess we know were becoming dinousaurs, when we prefer to see a 4 man rotation of Complete Game Pitchers. With a strong BP, if they need it, and a 5th spot starter, only to give the core 4 a day's rest or 2..... Paging, Earl Weaver......!!! I'd even venture to say, Mgrs. like Torre, are as responsible as anyone else, in the history of our Sport, to make a 9 inning affair, into a Little Lg. 6 inning affair. Or so it was, when we had Mo', and strong BP, of good set up men...!
