First of all, I made this thread for two reasons: One, because this is an idea that I have that sounds pretty good, IMO. And two, because all of us (definitely me) are getting too carried away with Iverson talk, we need to talk about our current roster again, not what might happen over the next few weeks. But I really think this is something Doc needs to at least consider. I mean, Al may not be as strong or as big as Perk, but he's quicker and he gives us much more of a weapon down on the block. When Perk/Gomes are starting, we have Gomes at the 4 (most of his points are clean up buckets or 18 foot jumpers) and Perk at the 5 (who sucks offensively). Now, having Big Al in there at the 5 instead of Perk would give us a great offensive weapon, and an actual post option. I mean we would be pretty good offensively if the team would buy into actually establishing Al down there instead of Peirce/Wally iso's with the occasional Bassy ankle break move. Al on the block would give us a low post option, and it would also help Pierce/Wally/Bassy, and even Gomes. Why? Say Al scores 6 points in a row, they get him the ball again. They double him. BOOM, a shooter is open. Having Perk in the second unit would also actually give them some defense. Perk/Scal defensively down low isn't bad, then you got 2 scorers in Gerald/Delonte, then some defense in Tony Allen. Also, Rondo, who does a little bit of everything. It's something to at least consider/think about.
If the Iverson deal doesn't follow through, I think that they should. Big Al had an AMAZING game agaisnt New Jersey and more importantly, they won. Perk doesn't give you anything on offense. Gomes is going to start no matter what, and he isnt really a post up player, so I think that they need some sort of an offensive presence downlow. I think that they have to keep him in the starting line up.
I'd like to see Perk and Al side by side, and we can all agree that's what was invisioned after they were both drafted. But I think if that were to happen the 2nd unit would be way too small with Gomes and Scal as the bigs. That being said I'd at least try to keep Al in the lineup. With Al in the starting lineup it takes one of the scoring options away from the 2nd unit and gives the ball to Gerald more (and rightfully so, he should be getting more touches), and more defense with Perkins. IMO Al in the starting lineup, like you said, is probably their best option, but only god knows what Doc will do.
Also, something I should have said in the opening post, we can't do it every single night. We need to do it in good situations. Example: When we play a team like Miami or San Antonio, we have to go with Perk for defense and size (we should also play Kandi-Man a little bit against bigger teams). But in a situation against like Phoenix, where they are small and a run and gun team, Big Al is the better option.
he definitely deserves the starting spot right now, but by the time Perk's back, he may be in Philly. :shifty2:
If AL J stays he should definately continue to play center, he's been doing fantastic, and if people say Perk is better defensively I beg to differ. AL's blocks and rebounding numbers have been up since his move to center. Is AL J a center???

Big Al can block shots, and we all know he's a very consistant rebounder, but Perk's size, strength, and shot blocking give him a slight edge. Perk can hang with bigger guys. Did you see when Curry backed Al down tonight, and flew him backwards on his ass? That would not happen to Perk, and that's the difference.
Perk is more of a force in the middle without question. He's among the leaders in blocks per game if I remember right. that being said, I think bringing perk off the bench would definitely help with foul trouble, although he has been getting better lately. The second unit is a very small team, I think Perk in the middle could really help them out on the boards and defensively.
Yeah Perk is more of a force in the middle but Perk needs to develop his offensive game, I always keep hearing about how he's developing offensively, I haven't seen much improvements with his offensive game. He looks uncoordinated when trying to make a move on the low post and we all know he has no shot what so ever. I like him coming off the bench better than him starting at the center position, but who knows with this team, we'll prob have teflair starting at center with scalabrine at point guard knowing doc.

Don't get me wrong, I love Al, and I obviously made this thread with the idea. But Perk's size and defensive game is very much needed as well. Yes, he is a terrible offensive player, but note that he starts with Paul Pierce, Wally Szczerbiak, and Sebastian Telfair. They are capable scorers. Then you figure, you need some sort of low post option off the bench. SOMEONE that can get you offense. Well, Delonte is off, Gerald probably won't play as much with Wally back and TA playing well, and who else could provide offense? Scal? Ugh. Having Big Al off the bench is needed in a sense, but again - I would love to see him in the starting lineup. He has been playing so damn well, and last night he showed that he can somewhat handle a guy like Eddy Curry.
