I really don't know much about computers.

My computer forced me to update Windows 8. During the installing it said an error occurred and the only way I could restore my computer was by erasing everything. So whatever, I did that. When I upgraded everything has gone haywire since. I get tons of pop-ups when using sites like this one and especially youtube, I can't even use that site. I downloaded adblock plus, that didn't work, adblock pro and that didn't work. I'm at a loss. Never had problems like this before. My laptop runs like shit. I'm pondering buying a new one. Is there anything you guys suggest?

Try a virus scanner and malware scanner.

You definitely have a virus of some kind.

    I don't get viruses.

MS Security Essentials does work good for basic AntiVirus software.

If you cant fix it then sign up for dropbox, 50gb free and upload all your important documents and pictures to it that you dont want to lose. Then restore to factory settings

Those are possibly and likely infected.

    That was my point :)

    http://www.komando.com/happening-no...ord-and-excel-files-are-making-a-comeback/all

Viruses hidden in Microsoft Word and Excel files are making a comeback

Hell, even downloading email with an email program on a Windows machine is a potential way to reinfect the whole machine.

that is unfortunate, but for even moderate computer users locating and eliminating a virus can seem like climbing Mt Everest. It could even just be a ton of malware and some of that doesnt get picked up on all the scanner programs. Scan your personal files and then follow my advice if all else fails then I guess.

For our kids we got them lenovo's with one button factory reset. Every 3 to 6 months they need a reboot. I found out a few years ago that trying to find and fix their shit was a nightmare.

Read your mail in a browser is my advice.

Only download documents you trust. You can use google documents or something similar for data in the cloud.

I'm not even sure image files are safe, FWIW.

Most certainly surfing porn sites (the biggest distributor of viruses from what I read) and pirating software and movies are just asking for a virus.
