Just signed by the governor, Oregon is the first state to automatically register people to vote if you have a drivers license or DMV issued ID card.

    Such BS.

Now the standard to vote is anyone whose feet reach the peddles. People should have to pay to vote. Take some sort of test on government. Instead now we'll just let anyone vote.

    Thanks Obama.

Shocked me that the new "governor" listed this as her top priority. Really!?

The only issue I can see with this is that if you're not a citizen you shouldn't get to vote.

Thats the only issue I have with this as well.
Automatically signing people up to vote isnt going to magically make those uninterested in voting suddenly want to vote

um, in Oregon can you not get a Driver's License until you're 18? :dunno:

If this was just a matter of streamlining government processes...this wouldn't bother me a ton. As far as the DMV site says, you must have proof of "permanent legal residence" and a SSN to get an ID card or license. If it said "proof of citizenship", I get it. But my grandmother lived in Portland for 50 years as a citizen of France on a green card. She shouldn't have the right to vote just because she's here legally and has a SSN for work.

Citizenship is not a requirement for an Oregon driver's license. I personally know several illegal aliens who have one.

That's the DMV not doing it's job, which is also problematic.

    and Maris?

I think if you live and work somewhere for enough time, you should qualify as a resident and have a say in the laws that tax you. I was a work permited legal resident overseas but could not vote and my taxes were much higher locally than the citizens. There's a way to address this but I'm not sure I've read where it stipulates that anyone with an ID will fall under that category. I think it must include being 18. Most of the foreign work force in Oregon from my view will never bother to vote here. A lot cannot read the ballots.

When I lived in BC, I got an Oregon drivers license by just showing a utility bill with the address on it. They asked if I rented or owned the home. I said rent and that was it. It was my brothers address.

The last time I renewed, they asked if I was a Veteran and did I want that on my drivers license?
    I said yes, and yes.
Then I need to bring a DD214, and a Passport or birth Certificate. Fine, I did it.

I asked what I need to if I didn't need the Veteran on the card.
A old drivers license or a utility bill showing where you live in Oregon.

Now what the fuck has this to do with being eligible to Vote? What primary will you vote in? How long do you need to live there to be eligible to vote?
    This is insane!

and not being able to read should stop the vote right there even if you are a citizen.

Quote doesn't work here? Quote Riverman.

This would be the perfect time to raise the renewal rate of the drivers license to $500 a year. No renewed license, no voting.

Republicans don't like this because the itinerant lower class votes for Democrats. To get out the vagrant vote, there should be new "Clean out the Snobs" legislation. Anyone registered on a message board would pay $200 to vote, and anyone whose driver license address is their car would receive $200.

Sure, that is a safe argument, but if given the chance to effect the outcome of an election towards the candidate that promises to pander to your causes, this is indeed the problem.

SPD:: A national vote for President is meaningless due to the electorial college which is another Congressional Power structure. In Oregon, people still can use electronic machines unlike that complate vote system travisty when Bush' Florida votes were tabulated by punch out cards and then mysteriously Bush wins. That crap occured for hundreds of years . We got to see it on TV. I think the vote on a local level is AOK and the last democratic action we can collectively join into.

If you want out of jury duty, just go in and ask them if you can get front row seats for the execution and they will excuse you

I think the change will make it much easier for this sort of stuff to go down.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rajneeshpuram

I remember when this all went down, the Bhagwan's people hauled in everyone loose on the steets of the west coast to get registered to vote in Wasco county.
The large population that lived in the parks and what around San Jose were just gone one day. Big article in the Mercury News about What Happened? It was a mystery.

This would be so much easier to do now, only dealing with the DMV to register. Register all over the state at DMV offices where ever, to vote in Wasco county. The county clerk
will not be tipped off, no one will know until the nefarious deed is done. Hell they could have controlled the county before anyone would know the rightful (dubious) number of voters in the county had expanded time 10.
