Yes. If you want to apply the rules as they were in the 1700s, it's simpler. Obama is not a natural born citizen because he's black. barfo
The constitution doesn't call for "full fledged" it specifies "Natural Born Citizen". Here is the quote; "No person except a natural born citizen, or a citizen of the United States, at the time of the adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the office of President" The only exception to the Natural born was given to the citizen of the US in place before 1787. So now you need to look the meaning of Natural born. Hint, Birth by Cesarean section is not a disqualifying happenstance.
Wrong, the term Black was not in use yet. No, we are looking to what the Constitutions says, it has not been amended in this area. Nor in this day does it need to be amended for a Black person to meet requirements for the office if indeed a Natural born citizen of the US. But you might have deduced this on your own, if you had read the Law of Nations.
Cruz is the only Repub to announce so far. Can't stand him & won't vote for him. Hillary hasn't announced, but is the presumptive Dem candidate. Can't stand her and won't vote for her. So far it sounds like the presidential box may go unmarked on my ballot...assuming Obama doesn't make it mandatory, of course.
Ha! I can't quite see Cruz getting the nod. Just too many people like yourself for him to get though the primary. Wish I could say the same about Hillary. I think she is it for the Left unless she starts taking so much flack, she quits on her own, for health reasons or what ever.
I think Republicans should want Hilary to be the Democrats nominee, she has tons of baggage and she is about as likeable as al-Baghdadi. If the Republicans put out an actually decent candidate it should be an easy victory. A POTUS/VP mix of the following should easily get a Republican in the WH: Walker, Rubio, Paul, Kasich. Just have to avoid the dumbasses like Bush, Perry, Trump, Huckabee, Palin or Santorum like the plague.
I didn't suggest the term Black was in use in the 1700s. I said 'because he's black'. The discussion is not about what the constitution says (we all agree what words it contains). The discussion we are having is the meaning of 'Natural born'. You claim that we should look to the intent of the framers to decide who is 'natural born'. The intent of the framers was certainly to exclude blacks and women from being president (and probably jews, catholics, irishmen, indians, gays, and who knows what else). barfo
Personally I would have no problem with the rules being changed to allow non-natural born citizens to be be pres, but as it stands now I would consider Cruz to be non-naturalized. I don't like him, I wont vote for him, but I would support an amendment which would allow him to run, like 35 years as a citizen or something like that. And then I'd vote for someone else.
Well, I don't understand the meaning of Natural Born to make any of the exclusions you seem to suggest. Perhaps the meaning as defined in the Law of Nations would not be the popular choice with today's population, but there is no other unless someone pull one out of no where. My take is that an amendment should be made to clarify just what the requirement is for President.
Don't you think Natural Born Citizens are a subset of citizens? So if blacks aren't citizens they can't be natural born citizens. Or a supreme court ruling would work. barfo
This is really looking like another election where I vote against somebody instead of for somebody. If you don't vote though, you lose the right to complain. If you can't vote for a candidate, vote against the worst candidate at least and complain away
Natural born citizens are those not naturalized. Black people were citizens all along - 3/5th to be exact.
Not exactly... they were counted for certain purposes as 3/5ths of a free man, but, being as they were slaves, they definitely did not have the rights of citizens. And the Dred Scott decision made it explicit that blacks were not citizens - until the 14th amendment. barfo
Wrong. Women weren't slaves, but couldn't vote either. I don't think Indians could, either. They were all represented in congress. We had different kinds of citizens is all.
You are barfing under the wrong tree, trying to find the meaning. Why not read the Law of Nations and what is meant by the term before you disagree?
I always look to the original intent of our cherished Founding Fathers. Is Ted Cruz a raving right-wing pig? Then he's qualified to be the Republican candidate. Is he white? Then the South will vote for him. Is he handsome? No, he has the face of a fat pasty milquetoast, even less athletic than fatty Jeb Bush. He has no chance. The Framers wouldn't pick Ted Cruz.
