...for some reason was given a 4 year/$82.5 Mil contract extension, making him the highest paid Red Sox pitcher ever...he's not a bad pitcher but I don't understand the Sox's thinking here.

Yeah Ron I saw this myself yesterday & my 1st reaction was WTF? I mean like you said, not a bad pitcher but $20M per starting next season. Career he's 76-63 with a career ERA well over 4 & a career WHIP over 1.3. He'll make $12M this year & will be increased by $8M in 2016 for what COULD be a bad 2015 season.

As early as 2 years ago he was only making 5 mill & sorry but I don't see anything that warrants such a huge increase. What the hell are these owners thinking?

I heard Dombrowski comment that young pitchers like Porcello need to be dealt patience by team staff while developing. They got really good results with that theory in Porcellos case then traded him go figure. He's a decent piece of equipment too bad he's now a Boston.

Decent yes & there's the kicker, DECENT pitchers should not be getting $20M dollar contracts. JMO.

Look at what the Yankees are paying that big ox who's going to start against Toronto tomorrow. I'll be surprised if that load gets by the 3rd inning.

I hear you Michael but at the time CC joined the $20M club he was regarded as one of the best in the game (136-81) with a CYA under his belt.

...they should have allowed CC to exercise his "opt out" clause after the 2011 season...but instead they compounded that bad decision by giving an extra year.

I know Porcello is a good Pitcher, my buddy in Detroit wasn't happy to see him go.....

However, I can see Fenway as being his downfall......

The short porch in RF and Green Monster, makes me wonder what Pitcher's ERA is in Fenway vs all other Parks, I'll have to look that one up, IF I can find it.

Porcello has only pitched 4 games in Fenway for a cumulative 2.14 ERA, shit I may have to eat my words, he may be more than fine in Fenway, ........

20 million for his prime years (27-30) seems like going rate these days.

Hell, if he has a good season he is probably leaving 70 million on the table

That would all be well & good if he's actually done something to date to have earned it, and he hasn't IMO.

...not for a pitcher with a career ERA of 4.30.

This is true, but you are paying for his assumed improvement to an extent. I was taken aback as well but the more I think about it the closer to reality it becomes

...but he was already under contract...why give him a fat contract now when it's not necessary?

...why not wait till he proves himself in Boston before extending him?...He'll need to somehow pitch like an ace to justify ace-type money.

...not saying he won't pitch well in Boston, but I just view it as a very puzzling and very risky move.

...bern, I think the main reason for the Sox trading for Porcello was made in desperation after it became apparent that Lester would not resign with the Sox...they had a great opportunity to lock up Lester last year but they low-balled him. They sweetened the pot this year but by then Lester had made up his mind to test free agency.

Yeah, I loved that. They really screwed the pooch with that one. Hard to imagine why they'd reward Porcello with a rich contract without seeing him pitch in a real game yet. Weird.

The only thing that big ox ever had under his belt was a steady diet of cheeseburgers. Really stupid of the Yankees to appeal to his ego and extend his contract.
