As I'm watching the Laker Rocket game, the Rockets are starting to use the strategy of fouling the worst freethrow shooer on the court so that the other team cant go down and set up an offense and let someone else shoot. They have gone down and fouled Kwame twice and he is 1-4 on the free throws. Well I'm listening to Walton and company and one of them thinks they should have a rule change and make it illegal. Now Walton opposed that and so do I. I think that is just part of the game and that if it can be used to exploit the opposing team, than it should be used. Now this might be a cheap strategy or something like that, but I kind of like it. What's your thoughts? Should this be changed??
how can you change it?it can't be proved that they're purposely fouling them..plus if the lakers were so concerned about this they wouldn't be giving him the ball

Here's a scenerio. Yao shoots and misses, Kobe grabs a rebound and starts up court, and then Alston runs over to Kwame while he is still in the backcourt and fouls him. They are over the limit, so Kwame has to shoot FT's. Now they cant do it under 2 minutes, but any time before that, you can. You understand? Its not like they pass it to Kwame and he gets fouled, its an off the ball foul. They used to do this with Shaq since he is a horrible foul shooter. Maybe I didnt explain it well before hand. Hope that helps.
I don't think they should change the rule... like you said pj, it is just another strategy that a team can use to exploit their opponents weakness. It also forces the opposing coach to make a substitution if that player isn't making his free throws, etc.
I agree with BigMo, if the players can't make free throws that's their fault. It's a great strategy that is a huge game changer, and I think it's very smart to do. They should not change the rule at all. Again, if certain guys can't make free throws, that's their fault. There should not be a rule change just to try and help out the poor free throw shooters in the league.
If they get fouled they get 2 uncontested shots from the free throw line. They should hit them.Is there a rule against jump-shooting free throws?
There's already the rule where in the final two minutes any foul away from the ball is two shots and possession. They don't need any more rules like these. My advice, learn to make some goddamn free throws Kwame. I know 8 year olds who shoot better than you.

Free throws........should be FREE points........hence FREE throws.lol yeah free throws are an important part of the game and if you cant make em, too bad.

Not even worth jumping, waste of energy if you ask me.
yeah I dont think they should, its just like if you post up a small guard. its just a weakness of one of the players so why not exploit it? you try to exploit the weaknesses of the players on the court so your team can win the game
There is no need in changing the rule. These players are paid to play basketball. They dont have to do anything else in their lives except pay bills, be rich, and play basketball. If they arent good at shooting free throws, it is their own fault. This is a smart and strategic move to gain an advantage in a game. The opposition is giving the other team a better opportunity of scoring, and it is that players fault if he misses the free throw. In baseball, you can intentionally walk a player. I dont see the difference....Same kind of concept in a way.

I actually want the NBA to change it's free-throw rules to that of college basketball...where you have to make the first one to shoot the second. Just my opinion.

But I agree with you, I think that addition would be a good one. It would give the opposition a better chance of catching up, and it would ultimatley make games closer.
I think its a pretty smart strategy, freethrows are one of the fundamentals of basketball, and if your a professional, being payed millions a year you should be able to sink a free shot, and if the team or player doesn't take the time to practise the FT the other team is supposed to be ablt to take advatage of weaknesses, any coach that doesn't do that isn't exactly a good coach.
Hey, they're helping Kwame practice for when the lakers make the playoffs.Hahahaha I said lakers and playoffs in the same sentence!!

Because that would mean that you are implying that the Lakers would miss the playoffs in which case makes you an ignorant fool.
