Helping fight hunger doesn't get any easier than the annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, which returns for the 23nd year on Saturday, May 9. The single-day food drive, when members of the National Association of Letter Carriers pick up donated food that has been left next to mailboxes, is the largest in the nation, collecting more than 70 million pounds last year. More than 1.1 million pounds of food was donated in Oregon and Clark County, Washington. The letter carriers hope to gather 1.3 million pounds of food this year.

To help, look for a yellow plastic food drive bag in your mail this week. Then fill it with nonperishable food items and place the bag next to the mailbox before regular delivery time on Saturday, May 9. Letter carriers and volunteers will bring donations to the Oregon Food Bank for local distribution. If you miss the pickup on Saturday, you can drop off your donation at any post office before May 13.

The most-wanted items include canned meats (tuna, chicken, salmon), canned and boxed meals (soup, chili, stew, macaroni and cheese), canned or dried beans and peas (black, pinto, lentils), canned vegetables, and nonfat dry milk. Avoid donating rusty or unlabeled cans, expired food, food in glass containers and perishable items like fresh produce.

Collected food goes to the Oregon Food Bank Network, which serves people who are hungry in Oregon and Southwest Washington.

This will be the 8th year that I've been in involved in this. It's the largest one day food drive in Oregon. Again this year I'm in charge of the Multnomah Village Post Office and will be leading a group of 40 volunteers. While the letter carriers pick up the donated food on their routes it's up to the volunteers to take it from the vehicles, sort it, pack it and load it to be shipped back to the Oregon Food Bank.

Please, even if it's just a couple of cans please donate tomorrow. It's a great cause!

Also I am authorized to sign any Community Service forums for high school, college and criminals if you wish to volunteer and receive credit for the hours worked.

Post a picture of the food you are donating here. (Picture must be of the food in the bag in front of your mailbox.)

Biggest donation will win a set of 5 Blazer coasters. Each one features a different starter laser-etched on it.

This is a great thing you are doing Sly. I am out of State so you wouldn't want me to win as my donation would stay in my local community I assume.

I couldn't get a hand job in a food bank with a baked potato taped to my nuts...

Yeah how do I do this in NH? Put some food in a bag by my mailbox? The coons would tear it to shreds.

And I already have a set of Mo Williams coasters anyways.

It's a nation wide food drive tomorrow. If you want to participate you can!

Put out canned goods. I don't think a raccoon can use a can opener.

I put mine out but it was meager (apparently I don't have many canned or boxed goods anymore) and I would rather MAS wins.
