We wouldn't really get cap space bro, unless you are also condoning giving up our rights to Lopez, free land and Matthews. Even then, we would get roughly 18 mil. What we won't have is MLE
Decline Kamans Team Option and have $22M (would also prefer getting rid of Blake's $2.2M somehow). That's enough to sign Wes, an upgrade at center (Tyson Chandler) a wing or PG with the remaining $3-6M, and then use the $2.8M room exception on a cheap big (bring Kaman or Freeland back.. Or sign Kofous) So yeah getting rid of Afflalo and 1 or 2 others gives us cap space to seriously upgrade this team
So in your scenario, we lose Lopez, Kaman, Blake and Afflalo for Chandler? kaman would not come back for less sorry. Kufos for 2.8 mil? Not gonna happen. Here's another scenario. Sign everyone already on the team, then use the MLE (5.5 mil) to sign a vet, then try and trade Batum, Crabbe and pick for Hibbert.
You act like losing Blake is a bad thing. And that losing Afflalo is bad when there's no minutes available for him. Kaman has $1M guaranteed so it'd technically be $3.8M, i think he'd return for that. You upgrade Rolo with Chandler and have money to round out your bench by going and getting a CJ Watson type. You think by clearing $24M we'd only sign Chandler and resign Wes? Cmon now.. This wasnt supposed to be a scenario, it was just supposed to show how getting rid of Afflalo could help us improve our team with the cap space cleared but you didn't even bother to read it right
Actually I did bother reading your entire post. Stop acting sensitive with those that disagree with you. I doubt Kaman will ever come back to Portland if we let him go. We can agree to disagree with that. As for Chandler being the only player, I was replying to your suggestion. Sorry if you not being clear enough got in the way. Even in your scenario, we lose Blake, Kaman, Lopez and Afflalo. So we got Chandler, Kufos is out of the question at 2.8 mil. Build your team bro...
The love for Chandler is understandable...I guess. But let's not forget how old he is getting. He's going to be 33. Sooner than later, the floor is going to drop from underneath him if you will. They need players that will be able to be just as potent in the playoffs as they are in game 10 and are able to sustain long playoff drives.
You forgot the part where we'd have around $6M in cap space after signing Chandler and Wes... We could use that for a wing/PG or keep Kaman -Losing Blake means nothing. A PG drafted at 23rd is an upgrade. -Afflalo? We don't need him. He's overpaid and would just take minutes from younger, more talented players. We need a slashing SF, not another inconsistent, spot up shooter -Lose Lopez? It doesnt matter if you upgrade him -Lose Kaman? We could easily find a cheap $2.8M replacement or use the same $5M to sign a better backup (someone like Brandon Wright) Basically we could be the same team that can't attack the rim and plays insanely inconsistent, often soft kind of basketball Or we can shed overpaid players, and use the money to upgrade our staying lineup and bench, while getting payers that have complimenting styles to one another and play with some fire and emotion.
"That's enough to sign Wes, an upgrade at center (Tyson Chandler) a wing or PG with the remaining $3-6M, and then use the $2.8M room exception on a cheap big" That doesnt sound like "Chandler being the only player"
And the scenario was just an example of how we'd be able to upgrade our team by cutting ties with Afflalo. Not something that needs to be completely dissected and debated
Hindsight the trade wasn't bad for the simple fact that the 2016 draft is supposed to be as weak as the 2000 draft. We shed non-building blocks - Barton/Robinson and hopefuly Afflalo. And dodge paying a second-round talent first-round money in 2016. Fwiw, Malik Pope would've gone mid/late-first this year - Ford has him projected to go top-5 next year.
