Cano has yet to reach 100 runs or 100 RBI as a Mariner and he's played 1 1/4 seasons there on a severe downward trend. On a 1 HR / 44 RBI pace batting 3rd with Nelson Cruz protecting him. You know he is seeing some fat pitches given his slump and teams not wanting to put baserunners on with Cruz looming. This is Year 2 of a 10 Year deal..... OUCH
Year 2 of that contract is looking ugly. 1 HR and 11 RBI 1/4 into a season? He needs to play well pretty much immediately to salvage his season. He's been one of the worst 2B in baseball this year and that is saying a lot given how shitty 2B is. Jose Altuve & Dee Gordon are miles ahead of him for the title of best 2B in baseball this year.
The GM rule of thumb should be you don't sign guys on the other side of 30 to ten year huge money contracts. The Angels aren't seeing value out of that Pujols contract either. Cano could certainly still have a decent season but not the caliber that Seattle was expecting over the last two years when they signed him.
1 and 1/4 seasons isn't enough to see a trend... sorry, statistics wouldn't agree with you on that...
He's certainly not the same player he was as a Yankee & he really can't blame his lack of power entirely on the stadium because Seager had some pretty good power #s last year.
If Cano thought he was "disrespected in New York he'll get an upgrade version in Seattle when his contract outruns his ability, note Junkie Josh and the Rangers. And on 2nd Basemen if I wer to pick one to build an infield around I'd have to go with Altuve.
No matter how many times he hits against the Yankees, I still would not want him on my team. Here's a guy who has completely underachieved with what others thought he was capable [of ]on the diamond.
Yeah I think 3 seasons in Seattle should be enough to determine a trend. But it has been a poor 1.25 years.
not fighting that at all as of now. but like winning the lottery we all say piss on it. robbie won the lotto and he understood going to seattle he was screwed. he does not care. he made generational money with zero pressure. like we all would do.
...big difference between the NYC market and the Seattle market. ...not sure Cano cares or not, but he's possibly voided his ticket to Cooperstown, and all because of greed. He never even gave the Yanx a chance to up their initial $140 Mil offer. I mean how much money does a person need? He could have stayed in NY, made millions more in endorsements, been universally known as the best Yankee 2Bman ever, retired and been a 1st ballot HOFer. ...again, money was the key factor for Cano and it was evidently the only consideration. Personally, I would have played for the Yanx for free...but given the opportunity Cano was given, I would have found a way to remain a Yankee for the rest of my career. And over time, I would probably have also recouped the difference in the money Seattle gave him and what the Yanx would have eventually offered, but again, they were never given the chance.
Fast forward to the 2019 season as the brilliant Yankee GM Brian Cashman brings Cano back to the Yankees for a few prize prospects and that Seattle will pay 1 million per year of salary owed Yankees to pick up the rest. Although Canos sun has set quite low in Seattle Cashman is quite convinced that he'll be his old self in New York at age 37 + just like former Yankee great A-rod.
As inept as the "Brass" has gotten since the '10 season it would probably not surprise me. Am I one pissed off fan at the direction this team has taken you bet.
I'd have loved to have kept Cano in pinstripes & I think the Yankees made him a very solid offer. But I'm also glad that the team didn't bend on that 10 year deal.
