Did you ever get the tour thru the OLF (orbiter lifting facility), to see a OV getting stacked, to the Tank & SRB's? One tall bldg, and hellacious cat walk at the top, in the rafters......... we used to get approx 200, 000+ Spectators up here, on avg, up until the Return to Space Flt. STS-26 in Sept 88. After that landing, the entire public interests onlookers waned, yet every mission was as critical as most others. Shortly thereafter, not often did this area get more than 50,000 visitors to Landings/Recoveries..... Rockwell was a good company to work for, at one time, incl. all NAAO work prior. Each Launch Rockwell would send a delegation of at least one person from all Depts. from PLMD; Fly them out, Charter to KSC. Put up like Kings, with unlimited per-diems...... and another person incl all depts & Laborers, every launch, til the entire Plant had been to at least one......
Tom, did you know when Lockheed underbid every other company for the Shuttle/Orbiter, "Launch and Recovery" Contract.......... 1/3 the Rockwell STSD employees, jumped ship to work for Lockheed, at either KSC or Vandenberg. Lockheed, bought their houses for 20% more than their worth, flat out cash buy out, then gave each person, another hefty 25% downpayment on their new houses, purchase in either Fla, or Santa Maria...........obscene money.......NTM-(again) per diem out the ass........ un-fkn believable, no wonder such a large populace of Rockwell employees jumped ship. 1- year later, Vandy was shut down for Polar OV Launches, (after Challengers Loss). The entire point of building a OV Launch Pad in Vandy, was strictly for: Polar Orbits, over seeing both China and the then U.S.S.R. Perfect method of planting satellites over both, the eyes of the night.........
