If Duncan et al return, I doubt it happens.

If Boylen read Bulls' message boards back when he was the interim head coach (after Skiles), he will never want to work here again. Sometimes Bulls' fans can be real dicks.

I'm not sure what to really think about it. I don't think it makes a difference one way or the other. If he doesn't argue with what the front office wants to do, he'll have paychecks for a few years I imagine.

Oops. Skiles' assistant was Jim Boylan. This is Jim Boylen. My bad.

K4E, I hope you eventually come out of this "all roads lead back to how much I think Bulls' management sucks" view of the Bulls. Knowing that you sincerely love the team, it can't be much fun.

I'm bummed about how this season went down and how the front office undermined what was a great opportunity for the Bulls to make the Finals. I'm sure I'll be cheered up eventually if the team performs well.

EDIT: OK, I thought it was the same old guy too. Seems like an interesting hire.

Just not reading stuff that detracts from the thrust of the/any thread seems like a good idea to me.

Thanks for solving the mystery. No joke, I spent 15 minutes yesterday on Wikipedia trying to figure out why his previous Bulls experience wasn't listed.

It does potentially make for an interesting hire. I wonder if Boylen is the person responsible for tracking minutes for Pop? Maybe this is a component of a more comprehensive approach toward managing players. That would be welcome news given the animosity we've seen during the previous two coaching regimes.

Boylen, age 50, is a "long time guy," having knocked around the NBA and NCAA basketball scene for nearly 30 years. As near as I can tell, he's only been a head coach one time (U of Utah) with mixed results.

I understand wanting to learn from anyone who has experience under the Master (Popovich), but I can't say anything I've read about Boylen makes me any more excited about him than I'd be if the Bulls were considering Jim Boylan. I mean, I'm OK with it, but Boylen is only a hot property because of his association with Popovich. Before Budenholzer got the Hawks gig, Boylen was a 49 year old 3rd assistant.

Let's hope it's because people want to work with Hoiberg. Probably just a sign Reinsdorf is willing to ante up for coaching talent. :-)

As an aside, I think I finally figured out what the associate head coach title is about. I think NBA protocol is that a team is not allowed to interview another team's assistants without permission for comparable jobs, only head coaching jobs. The associate head coach title allows a team to circumvent that protocol and interview another team's assistants.

I didn't realize it, but Boylen used to be the lead assistant for the Spurs. It wasn't the demotion spinmeisters will try to make it though, his replacement is a living legend the Spurs had been chasing for years.

Here's part of his bio from his M State hire.
