How you release someone this good is beyond me http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/rogeres01.shtml
The guy has never had a season where he finished with an ERA below 4.50. "They" just kept falling in love with his very decent fastball and occasion sharp breaking ball! The Yanks could've been finding something out about Montgomery or WHOMEVER for this time instead of Rogers. Yeesh.....annoying. This is where I have my biggest problems with The Yankee "management". I prefer to test a couple of kids at least for the first half of the season instead of OBVIOUS re-thread mediocre AT BEST journeymen in roles where they are going to see playing time. File Brendan Ryan under that category....he should be next. This stumble bum has been stealing money for years. I would've prefered they keep Pirela instead. Ryan is only a warm body who can be put at 3b, SS or 2b.
Joe G said " Actually tonight I thought he threw the ball pretty good, we didn't make the plays behind him." Jesus Christ Joe, I've supported you since game one but some of your comments in defense of team fuck ups are getting out of hand. The man failed every time you ran him out there. I realize you have to be on "PR" watch, just say the man wasn't getting it done. The fans are not as stupid as the Yankee Brass Hats. Act like an NCO and start taking names and kicking ass instead of molly coddling as an Officer would do.
^^^^^^^yup. Way too PC/metro sexual/wussboy. Manage like you got a pair, and freaking use them, make examples of the asshats.
Yep, he is GJG to me. Gentle-man Joe Girardi. "GJG". I am not a big fan....I guess I could live with him managing the team for now. His method and style of managing is basic predicatable humdrum. How about moving McCann in the two spot for a while and dropping Beltran behind Headley in the batting order. At least with McCann batting second the Yanks are more likely to send their best four hitters up in the first inning. I guess this is just too radical for GJG.
Yeah like when he says CC had good stuff tonight after a blowout or that Drew is hitting better, I have to wonder if we're watching the same game.
During the Playoffs & Series in '09 Giradi had big gonads, took charge and said this is how its going to be and we got a winner. In '09 Joe had good stock but the Brass has been less than successful at providing quality players. Joe has to send boys out to do a mans job, He can't come out and say yeah Rogers is a total dud thank God and Greyhound he's gone but he can say what we all know, the man is not meeting standards and we can live with that. We moan about running Drew and others out there but given the hand he's got I think he does well. It's the quote unquote "movers and shakers in the front office that are supposed to acquire the right type of personnel. Billy Martin would have taken Drew and Rogers out behind the woodshed!!!!!!!!
Martin played on 4 World Series winning teams, 250 something hitter who stepped it up during the World Series. That catch he made in the '53 World Series ranks right up with the very best. Martin improved Minnesota, Detroit, Texas, and Oakland Teams. Those '76 through '78 Yankee Teams were engineered by Game Paul, Steinbrenner fired him. Martin was the manager , Steinbrenner fired him. Had Steinbrenner lightened up a bit the Yankees may have had even more success. Billy also had the sack to deal with players who were slackers, Reggie still snivels about being yanked in that '77 game. I was in Germany when that game was played and that action made AFNE radio and TV headlines. I only got to see Martin one full year ('56) but I always respected him as a scrappy hardcore individual who wanted to win.
Tough as nails & a very good mgr but his numbers both as a mgr & especially a player are not HOF worthy. Again JMO. http://www.baseball-reference.com/managers/martibi02.shtml
I gotta' agree with ya' both on Martin....... the one knock on Billy, although he brought Moxy, and a Scrapper's toughness to the Yanx Teams he played on; moreso with the Teams He Managed.... Martin in 7 years as a Yankee; not counting PS games, played only 534 games for the Yanx........1215 Games Won as a Mgr, lost 1013 games, a .553 Win Pctg..... (with 5 Teams)......... Billy was as tough as nails, and with His approach, to never accepting 2nd best, I'd want Martin on my Team as a Player and/or Mgr. any y......Sad way he passed too, coming home from the Liquor Store on a Cold, Icy, Winding Road, ...... even tho' I don't see Billy (statistically) as a HOF worthy player, or- as a Mgr. It would be fair to say, Billy brought with Him, not only a mentality to win as a player and Mgr. Which is like IMO, immeasurable intangibles, one can't be taught easily if at all......
Don't forget that Billy Martin served in the U.S. Army ( 10th Mountain Division ) causing him to miss the entire 1954 and most of the '55 as well.
Whitey Herzog, HOF MGR: 1281 wins, .532 win %, One WS championship. Billy Martin, MGR, 1253 wins, .553 win %, One championship. Martin managed four different franchises to first place. 1969 Twins, '72 Tigers, '76/77 Yanks, '81 A's. Still a record. Martin teams vs Herog teams in post season: 2-0 Obviously the "voters" are holding a grudge or using discrimination against Martin.
