I just don't really get why people want to move Klein who at times is our best dman at a reasonable cap hit. McIlrath and even Skjei to a degree are a crapshoot to be penciling in yet. Maybe either or Hunwick is the sparw but why break up the core when you need to go for it in the next year or two? I get there's a need for another forward FA or trade possibly but i would find a way outside of losing Klein.
I move Klein because -His several years in the league shows that his start to the year last year is the exception, not the norm, and his ceiling is second-pair guy -He will be entering camp as the 6th defenseman next year, and 3m for a 6th dman is too much for a cap-crunched team -He doesnt have a NTC like half the defense (Staal, G and Boyle) -The only NHL-ready player we have on D plays the right side. AKA we have a cheap replacement. -Yandle's full hit of 2.5m (still cheap, but full nonetheless) comes on the books this year. Last year his hit was pro-rated. Couple that with Staal's extension kicking in, and we'd be spending ENTIRELY too much on defense next year if he stays. -His right-handedness and great start last year means he'll have value around the league and can easily step into a 3rd/4th defenseman role on a team with a weak blueline (cough Edmonton) Bottom line is either Yandle or Klein have to go, otherwise our defense is far too expensive. I keep Yandle 100x out of 100.
Not sure he would be the 6th dman, I think Boyle is more the 6th dman, although for balance I could see Klein playing with Y because AV doesn't trust a Y/Boyle pairing on D. I am fine with moving Klein, but we need to be dealing high on him AND we also need to have a plan to add the R shot forward we need. My issue with it is at only 2.9 mill even if we move Klein do we really gain cap space for other bigger moves? Klein doesn't have a big enough cap hit to really help us that much IMO, but if we feel he can I would be okay with Sather moving him. I saw Klein and Talbot for # 16 from Edmonton, and I don't like that deal for us. I think the Oilers should jump if we offered that, but I would want more for Klein and Talbot combined than just a mid 1st round pick which is no given, and won't help us for a few years.
It's not that Klein is that irreplaceable or anything, but I don't feel comfortable with any of Hunwick, Skjei or McIlrath stepping into a FT role. As is I think they will have just enough $$ to re-sign all the RFA's though nothing left for any other FA, that's the sticking point. I just don't think it's worth losing Kleins steadiness and experience just to save 2-3m. Tough call and all fair points above, though I'd argue 2.5 for Yandle for a full year is a great bargain.
Well its obvious that boyle is the defenseman we would all like to move, unfortunately he has that wonderful clause. So Klein becomes that guy to move which i dont think is a good move at all, rather keep Klein convince Boyle to accept a trade and try to package Talbot, Haglin and Boyle for a legit top 6 right hand RW with size. It probably wont happen but you never know. A trade I could see coming out of left field would be Staal being sent to Carolina, not sure I would like anything coming back but that contract leaving give a lot of play.
Id like to see Zucc-Brassard-Nash Kreider-Stepan-Williams Hagelin-Hayes-Miller Desjardins-Moore-Fast Lindberg I could see them maybe moving Moore and I really hope they don't. I know he has some sort of no movement clause
1) The beauty is Glen doesn't have to make a panic move, he could always hang onto Cam as a relatively inexpensive backup until the trade deadline. 2) Free agent RW I think the Rangers should look at - Steve Bernier, big guy with average offensive talent and would make Glass expendable. Debbies only paid him $500K last year. 3) I've wanted Hags gone for years, blazing speed but his hands can't keep up with his skates - 130 points in 266 games doesn't cut it. 4) Nobody knows Al -nobody knows. I agree with using Yandle as the QB on the PP and wish the Rangers gave him Staal's contract. 5) My only concern would be his adjusting to life in the states, one more distraction for someone looking to make it to the NHL. 6) I wanted McIlrath to get a chance this year when the Rangers went down 3 dmen but AV saw fit to play Kostka instead. A baffling move when you have the opportunity to get a look at a #1 pick in a relatively low pressure situation and choose to play a guy on his 4th team in 4 years. 7) I think Lindberg makes the team but don't think he'll be playing center. I really think AV has to take a hard look at Stepan at center, if the futility on faceoffs continue he should be moved to RW. 8) Zucc had a somewhat disappointing regular season down on goals and assists. Hopefully it was the distractions of the contract negotiations. 9) Every team has injuries, the Rangers problem was having so many dmen hurt.
