The Orlando Magic scouted Mario Hezonja for several years before team officials finally met him face-to-face June 4 in Barcelona and had the opportunity to ask him questions. During that 90-minute meeting between general manager Rob Hennigan, assistant general managers Scott Perry and Matt Lloyd and Hezonja, the Croatian swingman started to believe he’d be a member of the Magic.

Hezonja’s gut feeling came true Thursday night.

The Magic used the fifth overall pick of the 2015 NBA Draft to select Hezonja, hoping he can shore up their shaky perimeter shooting, provide scoring punch and give them a player with All-Star potential.

“We think he has a lot of firepower offensively and also the ability to defend as well based on his athleticism and ability to move around the floor,” Magic GM Rob Hennigan said. “We see him as a dynamic player and another young player that we’ve added to the group to continue to grow together.”

Hezonja blends above-the-rim athleticism with outside shooting accuracy. Although his focus on defense sometimes wanes, he should give the Magic a versatile scoring threat — a player who is just as comfortable coming off screens to shoot three-pointers as he is throwing down a backboard-shaking dunk.
