From the fitted navy blue suit jacket to the white dress pants to the floral pocket pin to the blindingly shiny watch, Cameron Payne’s draft night outfit screamed confidence.

Much like the Thunder’s established star point guard, its newest point guard fancies himself as a stylish dude.

“I can be a bit spiffy,” Payne said.

But his outfit wasn’t the only thing doing the talking on Thursday night. Payne was, too.

Moments after the Thunder selected him 14th overall, Payne stepped off the stage, strolled into a nationally televised interview and referred to himself in third person, the universal sign of an athlete without self-confidence issues.

“There is no ceiling for Cameron Payne,” Payne said.

For years, the Thunder has tracked him. Payne joked that OKC’s brass knew more about him “than I did” during pre-draft meetings. For weeks, the Thunder has been linked to him, reportedly making Payne a promise they’d select him if he was there at 14.

But as draft night neared, Payne’s stock continued to rise and it seemed unlikely Payne would be there for the Thunder to make good on that reported promise.

“Man, after the first 10 (picks), every team that was left were teams that I was high on their list,” Payne said. “So I mean, I was nervous. I got real nervous when 11 came, then 12 came, then 13, because all those team had me high.”

But the Pacers, Jazz and Suns all passed, leaving the Thunder – who seriously considered trading the pick until Payne fell in their lap – to select the smooth lefty floor general out of Murray State.
