    Hello darkness, my old friend
He's not opting out to get rid of Love, he created this contract in order to opt out. He can make more money going year to year, since the "max" isn't static and goes up as the cap goes up. He'll make a bit more this year than he would have if he had signed a regular two-year deal and he'll again build in player options so that he can recalibrate his max deal when the cap jumps a lot next year and the year after.

It also, as a side effect, means he can flee Cleveland whenever he chooses. I don't see him actually doing that, since he went back to Cleveland for the nice narrative that would be ruined if he left, but at least it'll always be an option.

I suspect Lebron will sign a 2-5 year deal for the max with the second year (3rd year; 4th year) being a player option. He can pretty much dictate whatever contact he wants. Why not keep signing contracts with player options after each year (unless not allowed) to keep all his options open. He will likely opt out again next summer.

you realize they're going to have to renounce Love's bird rights to get his cap hold off the books to resign Lebron, right?

they'll have to get rid of Loves rights to sign LBJ, since Lebron doesn't have bird rights they can't go over the cap.

You said they have $34M under the cap.

LeBron signs for $25M or whatever, they can go over the cap to sign all the rest of the guys to as large a contract amount as they want.

Love's cap hold is $20M. So essentially they'd have $14M for Lebron. To resign Lebron, they'll have to renounce Loves cap hold, and therfore, his rights. Once they sign Lebron, they'll have about $10M for Love, which means he will leave.

I seem to remember reading that with the cap holds, they have about 20 mil in space if both Love and LBJ opt out.

No they can't. Because of their cap holds they would have to renounce the ability to go over the cap to keep their players so they actually have cap room to keep LeBron. So they have 34 in cap space... Tristan Thompson's cap hold takes up 9 mil of that leaving 25mil. JR Smith's cap hold takes up another 9 or so leaving only 16. Loves Shumperts cap hold takes up around 8 leaving only 8 mil... Loves cap hold is 20 mil meaning they on paper are 14mil over the cap and can't re-sign LeBron... unless they give up the rights to their free agents.

While the team does not have salary-cap space or own James' Bird rights, it is able to offer him a contract up to the max of around $22 million per year under league rules. James is expected to eventually repeat his actions of last July and sign a one-year contract with a player option for the 2016-17 season that will allow him to become a free agent again next summer when the salary cap and max salaries take a jump.

They can only sign about $12 million worth of contracts and have room to keep LeBron. Smith, love, Thompson, Shumpert... can only spend $12mil on a combo of those players.
