Seattle Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano, who has been mired in a slump for most of the season, said he's been battling a stomach ailment since last August.

Cano, in an interview with USA Today Sports, said he was diagnosed with a parasite and treated it with antibiotics, but he is still bothered by acid reflux.

Robinson Cano, who averaged 23 home runs per season during his nine years with the Yankees and has just five this season, says he's lacking energy because of a stomach ailment. AP Photo/Elaine Thompson
"It still affects me,'' Cano told USA Today Sports. "Sometimes you drink water and it makes you feel like vomiting. I can't eat the same way I did. It's hard to deal with, especially being the first time this has happened to me. Sometimes I eat only once a day before playing, because I feel full. And you just don't have the same energy.''

The 32-year-old Cano said he's no longer eating red meat in an effort to combat the issue, but "sometimes I play without any strength or energy, but you have to play, give the best of yourself."

Cano finished fifth in the AL MVP voting last season -- his first with the Mariners after signing a 10-year, $240 million contract. His batting average has dipped to .248 with only five home runs and 27 RBIs this season; he hit .314 for Seattle last season with 14 home runs, 82 RBIs and a .382 on-base percentage.

In 2013, his final season with the Yankees, Cano hit .314 with 27 homers and 107 RBIs. In nine seasons with New York, he hit 25 or more home runs five times and drove in 85 runs or more six times.

"When things go well, people like everything you do,'' Cano told USA Today Sports. "When things don't go well, people look for 1,001 explanations, and they don't understand you're a human being.''

In addition to the ailment, Cano told the paper that he's still also grieving the loss of his grandfather, who died of lung cancer in March.

"He was my No. 1 fan,'' Cano told USA Today Sports. "If he were alive now, he would call me and say, 'Hey, what's going on? Last year you had better numbers. What's happening? Are you OK?'''

It's called the other side of 30 and a contract that he can't possibly live up to. He gets paid. The Ms are the ones who should be having the stomach problems.

...you might be right...I don't think his recent decline is physical at all, I think it's mental. He's in a place that's he's probably not real crazy about. I recall an article awhile back that he was having a hard time adjusting to the fact that there's not many Dominicans in the Seattle area...really Robbie?..that never crossed your mind before you "grabbed the money and ran"?

...the guy could have been a Yankee legend if he'd stayed in NY...he would have retired as the greatest Yankee 2Bman of all time...may have collected 300 hits...may have retired as HOF worthy...and certainly would have had his number retired and likely a plaque in Monument Park.

...as far as the money, if he'd stayed in the NY market he probably would have garnered just as must money in the end through endorsements/advertising.

...but he took the shortcut and I've said it many many times; "The 3 basic human emotions are; 1. Greed 2. Fear ...and 3. Greed.

It's a signing I'm glad the Yankees didn't make. Even if it sets you back a couple of seasons you're so much better off in the long run. Free agent in 2024. Good lord.

As I remember most Yankee Fans favored a 4-5 year deal with a possible option as fair. The big Seattle signing surprise with me was I'd always heard what a huge Yankee Fan Jay Z was. Ah hell, forgot, he got his cut of that deal as well. Bro Z took care of Robbie and himself. Seattle I spent a year there one week, no thank you.

I was in favor of less years but a higher dollar amount per year.

It was actually refreshing to see the Yankees be smart with a contract for once when it came to Cano. Other teams have done it. Look at the Cardinals. They weren't going to kill themselves by giving Pujols an idiotic deal.

...Ha !... you might be giving Cashman too much credit...I think that the only reason he was not able to make a second ridiculous offer to Cano is because Seattle blew him away with that 10 year deal...I have no doubt that Cashman/Steins would have gone 8 years...I know Cashman was in hot water over some hooker a few years ago but considering some of the inane deals he's made, he also likes to be bent over and take it up the wazoo.

...I just have to believe his struggles in Seattle would not have happened in NY if he had stayed.
