General manager Gar Forman made clear the Bulls' offseason improvement must come from within. But for all the talk about a less dysfunctional, more cohesive atmosphere with new coach Fred Hoiberg and increased roles for Doug McDermott, Nikola Mirotic and Tony Snell and expanded rotations, the Bulls' title chances still rest mostly with Derrick Rose, Butler and Pau Gasol.

That's how the NBA works. Stars win. And Rose must at least return to All-Star level, if not All-NBA level, for the Bulls to compete for a championship.

The Bulls won six championships in the '90s because they had the game's best player and often its second in Scottie Pippen.

In order for Hoiberg's first season to copy that of Steve Kerr's and end with a title, in order for this offseason plan to work, Rose will have to stay injury-free, stop taking ill-advised 3-pointers and be a stone-cold competitor like Michael Jordan.

Even if that happens, it might not be enough. Jordan's Bulls teams dispatched some fantastic foes over the years. Just ask Lenny Wilkens and the Cavaliers and Jeff Van Gundy and the Knicks and Jerry Sloan and the Jazz.

This being KC, one may reasonably ask if this is in reality the FO, setting expectations for the season to come.
